🩷 Dr. Janell Green-Smith was a nurse midwife in upstate South Carolina who passed due to complications surrounding childbirth. To say that we are all devastated is an understatement.

🩷Even if you are not able to donate, please keep the Smith family in your prayers.

We remember and honor Dr. Janell Green Smith, a certified nurse midwife, maternal health advocate, and powerful voice in the fight against the inequities that continue to harm Black birthing people.

Dr. Janell dedicated her life’s work to protecting mothers and babies. She fiercely advocated for safer, more equitable maternal care for Black women. She challenged the system boldly and showed up for her community with intention and love.

Tragically, while pregnant with her first child, Dr. Janell passed away during her own childbirth experience. A reality that should never happen!

She leaves behind her loving husband and her newborn baby. A GoFundMe has been established to support Dr. Janell’s family and memorial. The link can be found in our bio. Please give if you are able, share widely, and hold her family close in your thoughts and prayers.

As we mourn this unimaginable loss, we also recommit ourselves to continuing the work Dr. Janell so passionately carried forward. We demand accountability, equity, and dignity in maternal healthcare. Saying her name matters. Sharing her story matters. Changing the systems that failed her matters.

Rest in power, Dr. Janell Green Smith. Your legacy lives on.
