The amniotic fluid won't have motherโ€™s distinct smell for baby to look for postpartum.. Will they play an artificial heartbeat for the fetus to hear as it develops or will it be silent and mechanical like noises? It will be sustained with artificial nutrition, so like TPN & vitamins plus saline? Once born, babies are hardwired to smell/sense/look for their mother after all, they heard them and grew them for 9/10 months, these babies won't have that. Will they receive delayed cord clamping for its solid benefits or will this further medicalize birth? Will the babies be tended to be other robotic nurses in a nursery before being placed in human homes? Or what's the objective here? Why don't we study the tap water (and what ALL doesnt get cleared from filtration processes) and its effects on fertility? Where are the studies and recommendations on todays tech and damaging male's s***m quality? (I know there are studies, that isn't my point )๐Ÿฅผ๐Ÿ”Ž

Why turn to robots as incubators to "birth" traumatized persons literally out of the womb? Why not correct where we have wronged against our own systems? ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ”ฌ

I just can't. Won't. NOPE! ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

That's right โ€” nearly 2,000 women would face the risks of induction to potentially prevent 1 stillbirth.

But induction itself carries serious risks โ€” including a higher risk of C-section, NICU stays, and babies born in poor condition.

In fact, the risk MORE THAN DOUBLES for babies being admitted to NICU for more than 24 hours!

It's time we stop treating induction like it's risk-free or the "safe" option. Women deserve the full picture to make informed choices!

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’›โœจ๏ธ The Golden Hour โœจ๏ธ๐Ÿ’›โ˜€๏ธ

The golden hour postpartumโ€”the first 60 minutes after birthโ€”is a critical time for both mother and baby. Undisturbed skin-to-skin contact and minimal separation during this hour provide a range of emotional, physiological, and developmental benefits.

Here are the key benefits for both baby and mother:

๐ŸŒŸ For the Baby:

1. Stabilizes Vital Signs

Regulates body temperature, heart rate, and breathing more effectively than an incubator.

2. Promotes Breastfeeding Success

Increases likelihood of early latching and longer-term breastfeeding success.

Helps stimulate milk production through babyโ€™s suckling and mother's oxytocin release.

3. Boosts Immunity

Exposure to motherโ€™s skin microbiome helps develop the newbornโ€™s immune system.

Colostrum (first milk) is rich in antibodies.

4. Reduces Stress and Crying

Skin-to-skin contact lowers the babyโ€™s stress hormones.

Babies cry less and are more calm.

5. Enhances Bonding and Security

Helps newborn feel safe and connected through smell, voice, and heartbeat recognition.

6. Supports Brain Development

The comfort of touch and warmth stimulates neural development.

๐Ÿ’— For the Mother:

1. Promotes Oxytocin Release

Facilitates bonding.

Helps the uterus contract, reducing postpartum bleeding.

2. Increases Breastfeeding Confidence

Early latch success increases maternal confidence and satisfaction with the birthing experience.

3. Reduces Postpartum Depression Risk

The emotional connection and oxytocin surge may help lower risk.

4. Improves Maternal-Infant Attachment

Immediate contact fosters emotional bonding and maternal instincts.

5. Encourages a Restful Start

Both mother and baby often experience a calm, restful period after birth when undisturbed.

๐Ÿ“ Summary:

The golden hour isnโ€™t just a nice traditionโ€”itโ€™s a powerful, evidence-based practice. Supporting uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth (barring medical emergencies) can lay a strong foundation for both short-term health and lifelong well-being for mother and baby! ๐Ÿ’›โœจ๏ธ

โ€œThis just happens.โ€ is something stillbirth parents hear pretty often from their providers.

"This just happens" is not an explanation for why a baby dies.
โฃ
When a parent asks why their baby died, they deserve more than a shrug. More than vague language. More than a pat on the shoulder and silence.โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ–ค They deserve answers.
๐Ÿ–ค They deserve honesty.
๐Ÿ–ค They deserve providers willing to say, โ€œWe donโ€™t always know but weโ€™ll help you understand everything we do know.โ€โฃ
โฃ
There is a reason, but sometimes we donโ€™t (or canโ€™t) know what it is.

That distinction matters.

โค๏ธA baby doesnโ€™t die for no reason.
โค๏ธBut sometimes, even with every test available, weโ€™re left with no clear explanation, so the death is labeled โ€œunexplainedโ€ but that doesnโ€™t mean it was random, meaningless, or that there wasnโ€™t a reason.

It just means:
๐Ÿงช Medicine hasnโ€™t found it yet.
๐Ÿ” Or, we didnโ€™t have the tools, timing, or evidence to see it.

Other times we do know.

Sometimes itโ€™s preventable.
Sometimes there were red flags.
Sometimes someone didnโ€™t listen.
โฃ
And when we brush it off as a mystery, when we avoid the hard conversations, we rob families of closure, accountability, and healing.โฃ
โฃ
Every loss matters. Every baby matters. Every parent deserves the truth even when itโ€™s hard.โฃ

Saying โ€œthe reason is unknownโ€ instead of โ€œthere is no reasonโ€ honors the reality and complexity of stillbirth.

Growth spurts can take a lot out of you and baby. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. That's why I encourage mothers to stay ahead of them by preparing.
What does that mean? Download the app and get your baby's growth spurt/development leap chart. Keep snacks handy and nearby. Fill the largest bottle/cup you have with water. Think comfy and easily accessible when dressing for the day/night, you want to be able to provide milk or general skin to skin on the fly. Have a wrap or carrier close. Keep your charger nearby because you know you w i l l get stuck under that tiny eventually and your phone w i l l die. Reminder that growing sucks for everyone and sometimes causes baby/little physical discomfort. Y o u are their source of comfort, nutrition, and security.
And most importantly, remember that spurts/leaps are perfectly designed to bring your baby to new leaps and bounds both intellectually and physically at different stages throughout their infancy and childhood. They cluster when younger and space out as they age. ๐Ÿ”ฎ
Signs in baby of a spurt/leap: eating more/less, sleeping more/less, fussy more/less, & being clingy more/less.
Signs mom may notice: feeling like she doesn't make enough milk, being touched out, not getting usual amount of sleep, & holding baby more than normal.

The newborn exam / midwifery model โœจ๏ธ

After mother, baby, and family have had their undisturbed golden hour or so after a low risk + physiological birth, a gentle hands-on anatomical and clinical exam is performed by the midwife. Sometimes, her accompanying birth assistant and/or student midwife, under the supervision of their preceptor midwife, also participate in this assessment and opportunity for further information, skills, and continued training. Baby is assessed from their crown to their footsies, having their heart, breathing, reflexes, spine, mouth/latch, joints, and more checked out for any potential abnormalities or variations of normal.

Did you help with your baby's newborn exam? ๐Ÿฅฐ

CDEM: of
Having witnessed her grow from the daughter of my own midwife as a 14yo photographer fascinated with birth, to graduating high school early as a homeschooler, to a devoted and persistent college student midwife, to graduated and titled as a Certified Direct Entry Midwife. During all that, she has attended 3 of my own homebirths, got married, and grew her own beautiful baby girl who attends births just like her own mother has. Such a full circle for this sweet human. I just had to dedicate some space to her work, soul, and skills. I am honored to have witnessed your journey thus far. You're foraging paths! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Can you hear or feel this photo? ๐Ÿ’ซ

I can hear the water trickling around mama. I can feel those familiar surges buildling within. I can smell the oils carefully chosen in the air. I can see her laying back in complete surrendering where moments later she met her baby. ๐Ÿฅฐ

The Rhombus of Michaelis is a kite-shaped area of the lower back that plays an important role in physiological birth. โœจ

The Rhombus of Michaelis includes the sacrum, lower 3 vertebrae + overlying ligaments and soft tissues. During the 2nd stage of labor, the active phase, this area pushes backwards, creating more space in the pelvis. This allows room for baby's head to descend and body to rotate. ๐Ÿ’ซ

It is sometimes visible during labor, particularly if the birthing person is in an upright and active position. It can also provide a visual indication of progress. โœจ

Have you seen this before?! ๐Ÿ‘€
