Stick with me this is a long one…

Sometimes in this industry, people forget that age can be just a number… until a kid comes along and reminds them.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the comments:
“She’s just a kid.”
“She shouldn’t be trying to make finals—her goal is too big.”
“That horse is too much for her.”
“She should just be in peewees.”
“That’s too much pressure for a kid.”

The list goes on… and honestly? It’s exhausting. Because buried underneath all that noise is something people tend to overlook: grit doesn’t come with a birthdate. Heart isn’t measured in years. Drive doesn’t check for permission. Some kids are built different. Some kids want more. And some kids aren’t afraid to chase something bigger than themselves… even when grown adults say they shouldn’t.

And here’s the plot twist that nobody “worried” about:
She made the finals.
Not by luck, not because it was handed to her, not because someone felt bad—she earned it. Every late night. Every early morning. Every run that shook her confidence. Every ride that made her cry. Every moment she wondered if they were right about her… and kept going anyway.

She got to reap the benefits of her own hard work, literally shes pictured carry away armful of goodies she received from the finals. She got to stand in an arena most kids her age only dream about. She got to feel the electricity of all that effort finally clicking into place. And she did it while riding a horse that “was too much,” running in rodeos that “weren’t meant for her,” and chasing goals that “weren’t age appropriate.”

Meanwhile, most of the industry is scared to do what she just did—chase a dream with no guarantee it’ll work out. That’s the truth. People play it safe. They settle. They tell themselves the timing isn’t right. They convince themselves the mountain is too tall… while a kid just climbed it with a ponytail sticking out the back of her helmet.

Let her be your reminder.
Your sign.
Your little kick in the ribs.

Stop being content.
Stop waiting for the perfect moment.
Stop letting fear speak louder than your goals.

Chasing a dream is hard.
It’s messy.
It’s tiring.
It’s uncomfortable.
It’s exhausting.
You’re going to fail. You’re going to second-guess yourself. You’re going to want to quit more times than you’ll admit out loud.

But here’s the real gut punch:
Living with the “what if” hurts way more than any failure ever could.

That kid showed up. She chased something big. She did the thing everybody said she shouldn’t.
And she proved them all wrong.

Maybe it’s your turn.
Maybe it’s your season to stop settling and start stretching.
Because if a kid can stare down the fear of failure and do it anyway—
so can you.

And imagine how good it could feel when you finally reap the benefits of your work, too.

🖤

Congrats Adaline, keep going kid. 🖤

Good read!

The “Stifle Lameness” That Wasn’t: A Story About Referred Pain

I once had a client who told me about a horse that developed an odd, on-again off-again hind-end lameness that no one could quite pin down. Some days the horse looked off behind, as if his stifle was sore; other days he moved completely normally. Nothing about it followed the usual patterns. Things that should have made a stifle issue worse didn’t seem to, and things that “should have” helped it, didn’t.

We were all very confused.

One day, the vet happened to be on the property with a brand-new scope and offered to scope several horses for gastric ulcers — partly to familiarize themselves with the equipment. When they scoped this particular horse, they found significant stomach ulcers.

The horse was placed on a veterinarian-directed ulcer-care plan, and within a few weeks, something unexpected happened:
the ulcers healed, and the mysterious “stifle lameness” vanished along with them.

It turned out the stifle itself had never been the problem. The horse had been expressing ulcer-related visceral pain as stifle discomfort — a classic example of referred pain.

Why Ulcers Can Look Like Hind-End or Stifle Issues

This situation is a great illustration of how the equine body handles pain. Signals from the internal organs and the limbs travel through overlapping pathways in the spinal cord.

Here’s what science tells us:

1. Visceral nerves and musculoskeletal nerves converge.

The stomach and the hindquarters share overlapping spinal segments, especially through the thoracolumbar region. When the stomach is irritated, the brain can misinterpret those signals as coming from the back, pelvis, or stifle.

2. Fascia connects everything.

The deep fascial membranes link the viscera to the musculoskeletal system. When the gut is irritated, the horse may brace through the abdomen and back, altering pelvic motion and limb loading.

3. Protective guarding changes movement patterns.

A horse in visceral discomfort often holds tension through the core, diaphragm, and back. This can create subtle gait irregularities that look orthopedic but aren’t.

When the gastric discomfort resolved under the veterinarian’s care, the nervous system stopped sending those distress signals — and the hind-end “lameness” disappeared.

✳️ Why This Matters

Not every hind-end irregularity originates in a limb. Sometimes the body is expressing visceral discomfort through movement changes.

This story is a reminder of how important it is to work closely with a wonderful veterinarian, and to consider the whole horse — inside and out.

💫 “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞” — 𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬

Sometimes God sends people across your path not by accident, but as little reminders of what it looks like to live out your purpose boldly — and with heart.

Sometime last year, God crossed our paths with Tricia Aldridge. It started with something small — a little DM about setting up a lesson with Matt Mills (we were already super fans). But what began as a simple message turned into a spark that lit a fire in both of us — especially for Savannah, who became an even bigger fan of this incredible team: Tricia and her golden unicorn, Adios Pantalones.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥. 𝐑𝐚𝐰. 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞.

But even more than that, she carries something rare in today’s fast-scrolling world — she gives the kind of investment that can’t be bought: time.

She takes time to acknowledge others chasing their dreams — young or old.
Time to share the messy parts of her story.
Time to remind people that it’s okay to fall — as long as you get back up.

And those are the kind of people our kids need to see — not filtered perfection, but faith-fueled authenticity.

When we made a spur-of-the-moment trip to Waco to watch Tricia and Adios run at the WPRA Finals, Savannah spent the entire drive sketching a picture of Tricia and Adios. On the back, she wrote a prayer for them both — a little act of faith from a big dreamer’s heart.

After the run, we wandered the barns, hoping for a glimpse of that record-breaking unicorn. And then — we turned the corner.

🤩 “Oh my gosh, Mom… there she is!”

I could see Savannah’s heart leap out of her chest. We’d talked to Tricia over text before, but this was different. This was real life.

Even after days of racing and being pulled in a hundred directions, Tricia didn’t hesitate. She did what she does best — she gave her time.

We had forgotten a marker for her to sign Savannah’s Truly and Adios Breyers. Without hesitation, she disappeared for a minute, came back not just with a marker, but with swag, a hug, and a few words of encouragement that Savannah will carry for a long time.

As we walked away, Savannah’s eyes filled with tears — not because of fame or fancy, but because she had just met someone who embodied grace, grit, and generosity.

For me as a mom, that hour drive was worth every second for those fifteen blazing seconds she ran + a meet & greet of pure encouragement from one trailblazer to another dreamer.

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝.

And that’s what this world needs more of — people who take the time to invest in the dreams of others, people who live boldly but humbly, and people who understand that their platform is a place of purpose.

Thank you, Tricia — for reminding us that greatness isn’t just what you accomplish in the arena… it’s how you lift others along the way.

Best of luck at the NFR. We’ll be cheering you on — with big hearts, big dreams, big prayers and maybe even a few unicorn drawings. 💛🦄
