And just like that, it's gone forever.

The Wabash Railroad Bridge is no more. Our team got the rest of the 140 year old metal, railings, and beams hauled out safely. The road we built into the Des Moines River has been pulled out and removed and Walker is taking out the final few buckets of rock to clean up the site. We were happy to help Marion County take down this historic bridge.

Justin would tell you this work is hard but just look at that smile! Before really getting after the clean up we have to build a solid foundation for our men and equipment to traverse the Des Moines River. So much rock has to be brought in to create this road, and when we're done, it all has to come back out. Once this road is solid we can help this piece of Iowa history down gently. It's not every day you see a backhoe sitting in the middle of the river, but here we are.

The day the music died.

Along with the story of this old bridge came when the legs gave out. After they opened the damn upstream to relieve the Des Moines River getting up too high, the 143 year old pilings decided it was time to retire. Our team got there asap and got as much debris out of the river as we could at the time without risking any lives and injuries.

The Wabash Railroad Bridge.

This is what we saw just a few months ago as we moved in our equipment to take this piece of history down. We had just gotten all of the equipment there and were almost ready to start in when the rain started and just wouldn't stop. It pushed us out months waiting for the water level in the river to go down. We planned on taking it down while it was still standing but with all of the rain and high waters this old boy decided to come down on his own.

Marion County. The Wabash Railroad Bridge has been standing here over the Des Moines River since the 1880's. We have so much respect for the people that built this bridge. Every rivet, every bolt, every inch of this bridge was built with hard working hands. It's sad to see these go. It's been out of use for a lot of years and had just recently fallen into the river due to high waters coming from the dam release upstream. Follow along with us on this one to see the process in the coming weeks.
