Good morning Eyecare Pros! We’re all here to see if we agreed on the answer to yesterday’s Optician’s challenge question. We asked, “Color Vision in an infant is generally developed at what age?
A. 1-2 months
B. 3-4 months
C. 4-6 months
D. 9-12 months”
We were cheering you on when you answered B., 3-4 months! Our graphic gives you other milestones in vision development that you may not already know. That’s it for this week. We’ll see you back next Tuesday for another Optician’s challenge question. Stay happy, safe, and healthy and keep up the good work!

What a journey! I’m Dr. Amy Schwartz. My husband Matt and I moved to Gunnison in September of 2001 newly engaged. We bought the business, Family Vision Center, from Dr. Kelland Davis. We got married in June 2002 at Harmel’s Guest Ranch. We raised two amazing daughters’, Beth and Allie. This fall we will become empty nesters as Allie heads to Western Washington University in Bellingham. Beth will start her senior year at Montana State studying abroad for the semester in Austria.
Matt and I moved here to Gunnison because this valley has everything we love. We enjoy mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and rafting in the summer. In the winter we play hockey, ski, and Nordic ski. The sheer beauty of this valley in all directions is amazing and there’s just no place like it.
Over the years we have also enjoyed getting to know and understand better the rich ranching culture and mining history of the valley.
Looking back over the last 23 years working as an optometrist, I still believe that being able to provide the joy of good vision is the best job ever. I strive daily to continue learning and to continue to provide the best eye care to my patients that I possibly can. I feel honored to have met and been able to help so many people here in the Gunnison Valley.

Hello! I'm Autumn, Office Manager and ABO Optician here at Family Vision Center. Having been born and raised in the tiny town of Lake City, it made perfect sense to move here to the big city. I am still in love with Sunny Gunny after all these years and will never tire of the endless options of outdoor recreation we have here. When I’m not at the clinic you can find me out enjoying the sunshine, by bike, board or ski.
I can’t believe I’ve been here at Family Vision Center for a decade now! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing individuals through this practice in that time. Helping Dr. Amy’s patients select eyewear that they feel good and look great in is always rewarding. I love watching the amazement in a child’s face when putting on their first pair of glasses, finding clarity in the world around them for the first time! Coaching a high school kid through inserting and removing contacts so they can excel in their sport, just a few of the reasons I keep showing up for work!

My name is Rey short for Reynaldo. I have been living in Gunnison since 2005 after growing up in Montrose. The summers and the people here have definitely impacted the reasons I call this place my home. I love to soak up the summer as much as possible by spending my time at the lakes or going on a hike and escape the summer crowd. When I’m not out and soaking up the sun I’m soaking up the love and cuddles of my two fur babies, Bengi and Queenie. If it were up to them they would not let me leave our space and just forever cuddle with them. Maybe someday they will allow me to take them out on the paddle board and enjoy the sun with me but for now they enjoy being indoor cats. When time spares me the moment I like to take solo trips to a new place and expose myself to new cultures and people and leave inspired. I have enjoyed working at Family Vision Center and it has altered my understanding for eye health as well as overall health. As an optician here at Family Vision Center I have learned so much and every day is an opportunity to learn more and using all three of my languages, English, Spanish and Cora(dialect) to help all patients better understand their examination. At the end of the day it makes me happy to see patients leave being able to see better when we dispense glasses to them and leaving with the sense of being cared for.

Family Vision Center is so fortunate to have our hard working, dedicated staff.
This Thanksgiving week I would like to shine the spot light on the individuals who keep this place running so efficiently. To kick it off, I'd like to introduce Elizabeth, our smiling receptionist, optician, technician and so much more;

My name is Elizabeth, I am a born and raised 3rd generation local and am lucky to call this beautiful place my home. I feel fortunate to be able to raise my 2 children here. Summer is my favorite time of the year to spend time with them, the 2 cats, and my dog. I enjoy going to Blue Mesa lake with my family to relax or to catch waves with the jet ski. I also enjoy going on hikes during the fall season to see all the gorgeous colors. I started my career about 6 years ago and love seeing the enjoyment in people when they are able to simply reed street signs or a menu again. Which happens to be one of the reasons why I love working at the Family Vision Center. It has made me SEE (no pun intended) how important vision is to people. You would not be able to appreciate the true beauty of this place without seeing.
