Hey Extraordinary Women~ This posted on https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=11827 feels like another exciting share for Women’s History Month👏🏼❤️

Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick is perfect for celebrating today's anniversary of the groundbreaking 1913 Women's Suffrage Parade, a major turning point in the fight for American women's right to vote: "How Women Won the Vote: Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, and Their Big Idea" by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. When Alice Paul met Lucy Burns in a British jail after a suffrage protest, it was the start of a beautiful friendship – and an alliance that would transform America! They returned home with bold plans to bring new ideas U.S. Women's Suffrage Movement and push for a long overdue Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women's right to vote.

To grab the public attention, they organized giant events, like a grand suffrage parade the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration and a two-year long picket outside of the White House, and they endured prison and hunger strikes. They reinvigorated the activists who had been fighting for women's suffrage for over seven decades and attracted countless new supporters who refused to be silenced, and together, their determination made the 19th Amendment a reality.

This captivating book by a Newbery Honor winner uses engaging storytelling and cartoon-like art to tell Alice and Lucy's story, while interspersing dozens of historic photos and fascinating sidebars with maps, timelines, and newspaper clippings throughout, making this a fun, engrossing introduction to this momentous period in American history. Highly recommended for ages 7 to 12.

There is also a fantastic picture book about Alice Paul and her leadership during this critical period in the fight for women's rights: "Fight of the Century: Alice Paul Battles Woodrow Wilson for the Vote" for ages 5 to 9 at https://www.amightygirl.com/fight-of-the-century

For several excellent biographies about these trailblazers for adult readers, we recommend "Alice Paul: Claiming Power" (https://www.amightygirl.com/alice-paul-claiming-power), "A Woman's Crusade: Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot" (https://www.amightygirl.com/a-woman-s-crusade), and "Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait" (https://www.amightygirl.com/how-long-must-we-wait-alice-paul)

For a fascinating book for adult readers about the final fight for the ratification of the 19th Amendment during the summer of 1920, we also recommend "The Woman's Hour" at https://www.amightygirl.com/the-woman-s-hour

As we near the end of Black History Month and enter Women’s Month, we must reflect on the march that helped bring us the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Civil Rights Movement brings to mind male leaders like the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rep. John Lewis. Too often, however, we forget that women were integral to the Selma campaign and the civil rights movement in general. Without these women’s contributions and sacrifices, American democracy may look very different.
Black women have a deep history of contribution to transformative movements in this country, but that work is often overshadowed by the accomplishments of their male contemporaries. Here at the Alice Paul Center for Gender Justice, we shine a light on the women who played critical roles in securing the right to vote! 🗳️
