Sarcopenia is the age related loss of muscle mass and strength. It starts around age 30 and accelerates after 50. By 80, most people have lost 30 to 50 percent of their peak muscle mass.
The terrifying part is that it is invisible for decades. Your weight on the scale might stay the same because muscle is being replaced by fat. You look the same. You feel mostly the same. Until the day you cannot open a jar. Or catch yourself when you trip. Or get up off the ground.
Sarcopenia is not inevitable. It is a disease of disuse. The muscle you have right now will stay if you give it a reason to.
Resistance training is the only proven intervention. Not walking (though walking is wonderful). Not stretching. Not yoga alone. You need to challenge your muscles against resistance regularly.
This is not about being in the gym for hours. Two to three sessions per week of 30 minutes changes the trajectory completely.
