Here is our second ABA term for our What is it Wednesday!

Term: antecedent

Definition: anything that happens immediately BEFORE a behavior occurs
Example: parent tells child to clean up toys
Child cries

The antecedent in the example is the parent telling the child to clean up the toys. This is what happened directly BEFORE the behavior (child cries).

It is important to know what the antecedent is so that strategies can be put into place in hopes to be proactive in preventing unwanted behaviors.
