Food is a big part of many gatherings, and having a food allergy can make these situations tricky. Don’t hesitate to ask what ingredients were used and how the food was prepared—cross-contamination (cross-contact) can happen even with good intentions. And if the spread feels too risky or you simply don’t feel comfortable eating food made by others, it’s okay to skip it. Consider eating before you arrive and bringing your own safe snacks as a backup.
