So much stigma surrounds opioid-use disorder. Addiction is a disease - not a character flaw. According to the American Society for Addiction Medicine, addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment and an individual’s life experiences. People struggling with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. An estimated 49 million people struggle with a substance-use disorder, according to the most recent data from SAMHSA. But there is hope! Crossroads helps 26,000 patients per month get their lives back. If you or someone you know needs help, please visit https://hubs.ly/Q029N5C-0 or call our 24/7 Patient Access Center, with instant intake and bridge scripts, at 866-741-2326.

What is harm reduction? According to SAMHSA, harm reduction is an evidence-based approach to meet people where they are and equip them with tools that can improve their quality of life - possibly even save their life. Our Community Engagement team makes hundreds of visits per month to referring partners. Our teammates hand out harm reduction kits for underserved communities across the nine states we serve. They include fentanyl and xylazine testing strips (where legal) so users may test the drugs they're about to take. They also hand out Narcan, the medication that reverses opioid overdoses. The goal is to help more patients find treatment and ultimately get their lives back. If you or someone you know needs help, please visit https://hubs.ly/Q029N2-p0 or call our 24/7 Patient Access Center, with instant intake and bridge scripts, at 866-741-2326.

Andrew Mark, our Chief Growth Officer, sat for a panel in October on MAT Trends and Investment Outlook at the Behavioral Health Business conference in Chicago. When asked about the forecast for 2024, Mark discussed the need to treat the whole person. According to SAMHSA, approximately 45 million Americans have a substance use disorder, but only six percent of those sought treatment. For those who seek treatment, Mark emphasized comprehensive care for patients. Specifically mentioned was care coordination, which helps people with obstacles to treatment, such as transportation, food insecurity and housing. Crossroads provides care coordination in our commitment to treating the whole person. To listen to additional great content from Mark, the entire audio recording for the panel is available here: https://hubs.ly/Q029ktFR0

According to NIDA, among veterans presenting for first-time care within the VHA system, close to 11% met the criteria for a substance use diagnosis. One report notes that more than 10% of veteran admissions to substance use disorder treatment centers were for he**in. As we salute our teammates and patients who are veterans, let's remember to reach out to those who may need help. Our teammates, along with the rest of the country, are mourning the loss of Matthew Perry. Perry rose to fame playing Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom Friends. Despite his dreams and eventual reality of international success and fame, Perry struggled with opioid and alcohol use disorder. In a 2013 People magazine article, he said, “I had a big problem with alcohol and pills, and I couldn’t stop.” In his memoir, he describes his ongoing battle for sobriety, along with a drug-induced health scare that landed him in the hospital for five months. He founded Perry House, a men’s sober living facility and lobbied Congress as a celebrity spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals about the need for more funding for drug courts. If you are struggling with opioids, Crossroads can help. We use medication-assisted treatment to help those with opioid use disorder. 90% of our patients are still in remission after one year of treatment.

10/26/2023

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 28. Unneeded prescription medication – those that are old, unwanted, or no longer needed – are a public safety issue, often becoming a gateway to addiction. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. A majority of people who misuse a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend. DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events are one way to dispose of unneeded medications. Beyond Take Back Day, there are opportunities to regularly and safely dispose of unneeded medications at pharmacies, hospitals, police departments and businesses. Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23rd through 31st. Everyday, Americans across the country make significant daily contributions to their communities by being the best they can be because they live Drug-Free! Drugs decrease levels of neurotransmitters in the reward system of the brain, such as Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins. This can block our brain from naturally experiencing happiness. We encourage you to participate in drug prevention education activities, not only during Red Ribbon Week, but also throughout the year, making a visible statement that we, as a community, are strongly committed to a drug-free lifestyle.
