Please take a moment to listen to a powerful moment in a music therapy session had with a young man. While he was initially unable to express with words what he was feeling, he engaged in improvisation with one of our music therapists and created over 10 minutes of music. After this experience, he verbalized what the music meant for him and why this moment felt so connected to his life.

This is why we do what we do! "Music is what feelings sound like" 🎹🎶

In one group, students drew pictures and reflected on their favorite activities during our afterschool music program! The students love a good music mad libs 😂

We're also liking a new program name and testing it out: Not Your Average Music Club has a nice ring to it! What do you think?

Kinsella Magnet School of Performing Arts alumna, Mellany Gomez, Board-Certified Music Therapist, reflects, "Music education is so crucial because it allows students to express themselves in a creative way, build critical thinking skills, form healthy and natural relationships with their peers, and have opportunities for reflection and growth. Learning and performing music utilizes so many parts of the mind and body and these skills can be transferred to other areas of life as well! I wouldn't be where I am today without music education. Music gave me a voice when I was too nervous to speak. Music helped me connect with those around me. Without music experiences in school, I may have not had the opportunity to learn any of the instruments I love now or sing in a chorus. Without music in school, I wouldn't be able to help others as deeply as I am able to today."
