There is a certain strange grace in our sufferings. It is not for punishment but rather a universal education we all must experience.

Without suffering, many would not seek God or the kingdom of heaven. Pain has bought many to the truth not forcefully but by free will. God will not force us to love him, that is not who he is and or will be. He will however give us opportunities to make that choice, in hopes that you will chose eternal life.

God’s mercy covers us, enfolds us, sustains us, and gives us strength to persevere. God’s mercy allows us to be in our grief, to bear the narrow and cramped space of our limited lives, to face our sins and failures squarely. God’s mercy allows us to be in our grief because it assures us that we will pass through that grief to joy.

Jesus' gospel message was that we were all created in the image of God, with the capacity to mirror the same loving-kindness that is God’s essence. We show this by following his example: by being merciful, engaging each other with compassion, listening to each other intently, and, when necessary, asking God for the courage to speak truth to power.

I often feel tossed about in the midst of a storm. Yet into the midst of this fear comes Jesus, who speaks words of assurance and peace: "Peace! Be still!" And when he does, a dead calm follows. I am not saying that you shouldn’t be afraid, but that in the midst of that fear, we can sometimes hear Jesus uttering words of peace.

In silence, God patiently, excitedly waits for us to cast ourselves into him, to rest in his bosom, to venture forth with a whisper or a shout and say, “I am weak,” or, “I need you,” or “I love you.” God’s silence is that merciful, rare permission to be vulnerable, to need, and to love, in earnest sincerity.

Being human, they struggled. If they had not come undone – if they had not broken open, even just a little – the words of the angel would not have had room to land and to grow in their hearts.
