God’s mercy covers us, enfolds us, sustains us, and gives us strength to persevere. God’s mercy allows us to be in our grief, to bear the narrow and cramped space of our limited lives, to face our sins and failures squarely. God’s mercy allows us to be in our grief because it assures us that we will pass through that grief to joy.

To be tempted or tested is neither positive nor negative. Like yeast, testing brings nourishment or decay depending on how skillfully and faithfully we interact with it. Entrusting ourselves to the mercy of God is to choose the yeast of the kingdom.

Jesus' gospel message was that we were all created in the image of God, with the capacity to mirror the same loving-kindness that is God’s essence. We show this by following his example: by being merciful, engaging each other with compassion, listening to each other intently, and, when necessary, asking God for the courage to speak truth to power.

I often feel tossed about in the midst of a storm. Yet into the midst of this fear comes Jesus, who speaks words of assurance and peace: "Peace! Be still!" And when he does, a dead calm follows. I am not saying that you shouldn’t be afraid, but that in the midst of that fear, we can sometimes hear Jesus uttering words of peace.

As people of faith, what we are longing for is not some imagined time when life will be simpler, but a promised time when God’s reign of salvation will be fulfilled. The promise of Christmas is that God, the king of Israel, the Lord, will be in our midst to rescue us.

In silence, God patiently, excitedly waits for us to cast ourselves into him, to rest in his bosom, to venture forth with a whisper or a shout and say, “I am weak,” or, “I need you,” or “I love you.” God’s silence is that merciful, rare permission to be vulnerable, to need, and to love, in earnest sincerity.

Mary and Joseph’s consent to the divine initiative was offered in the thick of public disapproval, private confusion, painful risk, and gathering scandal.

Being human, they struggled. If they had not come undone – if they had not broken open, even just a little – the words of the angel would not have had room to land and to grow in their hearts.

When we wake up each morning, we can presume God’s presence, and power, and provision.

We have been kept alive for as much as one more day to know God, and to love God, and to serve God as only we, uniquely, can do.

It’s why we are still alive. Which turns life into such an amazing adventure.
