Having difficulty getting sessions started feeling productive but also fresh? Here are some ways to focus opening questions to sessions, having some variety in our back pockets helps us stay fresh!
🗣️ 1. Check-In Style (Routine + Emotion-Focused)
"How have things been for you since we last met?"
-Encourages reflection and continuity.
-Opens space for sharing updates, successes, or struggles.
🧭 2. Goal-Oriented Style (Focused + Directive)
"Is there something specific you’d like to focus on today, or should we pick up where we left off?"
-Encourages collaboration.
-Reinforces that the session is guided by the client’s needs.
🌡️ 3. Emotional Temperature Style (Mindfulness + Emotional Awareness)
"On a scale from 1 to 10, where would you say your stress or mood is today? What’s contributing to that number?"
-Builds emotional vocabulary.
-Offers a quantifiable check-in point.
🪞 4. Reflective Style (Depth-Oriented + Insightful)
"I've been thinking about something you shared last time. How have you been sitting with that since then?"
-Deepens continuity and insight.
-Shows the therapist is invested and tracking the client’s growth.
🎨 5. Creative or Playful Style (Great for kids, teens, or group settings)
"If your week were a movie or a weather report, how would you describe it?"
-Builds metaphor and creative thinking.
-Helps access emotions in a non-threatening way.
