Peggy's Pathway for Women's Cancer Care

Peggy's Pathway's mission is to raise funds to support research into innovative treatments and early detection of uterine/endometrial cancer. Pettinato.

This year, more than 61,000 women will be diagnosed with uterine cancer and nearly 11,000 women will die from this disease, according to the American Cancer Society. Uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer for women in the United States. Margaret (Peggy) M. Pettinato was one of its victims. Peggy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She assumed leadership roles

in many worthy community endeavors. She was a warm, elegant and charming woman who easily made anyone she met feel at home. She became a licensed Realtor, and directed the family real estate business.

“Peggy was also health conscious, always diligent about receiving the widely known and recommended screenings for women in her age range,” said her husband, Robert W. Nevertheless, in May 2014 she was diagnosed with uterine cancer.
“Unfortunately, endometrial cancer isn’t easy to detect in the early stages, so it can reach an advanced stage before signs and symptoms are noticed,” Mr. Pettinato said. “My wife faced this disease with grace, tenacity and great courage, but the odds were against her before she had a real chance to overcome it.”

Surgery was immediately performed to remove as much of the cancer as possible, and then she underwent months of chemotherapy treatments in accordance with the standard of care at that time. Unfortunately, however, by the time her symptoms appeared, the diagnosis was made, and the surgery performed (all within the span of approximately one month), the cancer was already at Stage IV. On January 16, 2015, she passed away due to this disease. In the midst of their grief, Peggy’s family sought a way to memorialize her life while following her example of helping others. They have established Peggy’s Pathway for Women’s Cancer Care, a foundation with a mission to raise funds to support research into innovative treatments for and/or early detection of uterine/endometrial cancer, the disease that claimed her life. The initial goal is to raise at least $100,000 to fund research activities being performed by nationally acclaimed medical scientists at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, in the hopes of advancing their studies, and in doing so, giving others the means to challenge their cancer.

The spirit of generosity was on full display once again at Grotto Pizza Harveys Lake, where the 30th Annual Parade of Trees concluded another successful season of community giving.

This year’s event raised more than $52,000 for local charities, a total that includes a $25,000 donation from the Joseph and Erma Paglianite Charitable Foundation.

Since its inception three decades ago, the Parade of Trees has now generated more than $650,000 for charitable organizations throughout the region. The tradition continues to thrive thanks to the participation of area businesses and the enthusiasm of the public.

Visitors cast their votes through donations to their favorite decorated trees, each representing a local business and benefiting a designated charity. This year’s top three trees were:
1st Place: Allow Wheels supporting Peggy’s Pathways
2nd Place: Sorber Well Drilling supporting Patriot’s Cove
3rd Place: Reilly Finishing Technologies supporting Valley with a Heart Benefits

Grotto Pizza extends its heartfelt thanks to all participating businesses, charities, and community members who helped make the 30th anniversary year one of the most successful yet.
