🌙 May is Better Sleep Month 🌙

Quality sleep plays an essential role in physical health, mental well‑being, and overall quality of life. If you’re having trouble getting the rest you need, small changes can make a big difference.

Tips for better sleep:
✅ Keep a consistent bedtime and wake‑up time—even on weekends
✅ Create a calming bedtime routine (reading, stretching, or deep breathing)
✅ Limit screen time at least one hour before bed
✅ Avoid caffeine and large meals late in the evening
✅ Make your sleep environment cool, quiet, and dark

At OCHS, we know that sleep concerns can affect daily health. If you are an OCHS patient experiencing ongoing sleep problems, talk with your care team about possible causes and support options.

Rest is not a luxury—it’s a vital part of good health. 💤

💙 May 6 is World Asthma Day 💙

Asthma affects millions of people and can make everyday activities more challenging if not well managed. World Asthma Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about asthma, encourage good control, and highlight the importance of individualized care.

At OCHS, we work with our patients living with asthma to help them understand their condition, manage triggers, and use medications correctly. With the right care plan, many people with asthma can breathe easier and stay active.

If you are an OCHS patient and have questions about your asthma symptoms or treatment, talk with your care team. Taking asthma seriously can help prevent flare‑ups and improve quality of life.

🧼 May 5 is World Hand Hygiene Day 🧼

Clean hands save lives. At OCHS, proper hand hygiene is one of the simplest—and most important—ways we protect the health of our patients, staff, and community.

From handwashing to hand sanitizer, these small actions help prevent the spread of infection and keep care safer for everyone who walks through our doors. Today, and every day, we’re committed to high standards of safety and infection prevention.

Thank you to our dedicated care teams—and to our patients—for doing your part. Clean hands matter. ✅

☀️ May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month ☀️

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States—and here on Cape Cod, the risk is especially high. A 2018 Blue Cross Blue Shield report found that the Barnstable–Yarmouth area had a skin cancer diagnosis rate of 8.6%, nearly double the national average.

This increased risk is linked to higher UV exposure from outdoor activities like beach‑going and boating.

At OCHS, we encourage our patients to take skin health seriously by practicing sun safety, performing regular skin checks, and talking with their care team about any concerning changes. Early detection can make a significant difference.

This month is a reminder to protect your skin—not just in summer, but year‑round. 🧴🕶️

💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

At OCHS, we recognize that mental health is a vital part of overall health. For our patients, caring for mental and emotional well‑being is an important part of the care we provide every day.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to reduce stigma, encourage honest conversations, and remind our patients that it’s okay to talk about how they’re feeling. If you are an OCHS patient and have mental health concerns, we encourage you to speak with your care team about available support and resources.

Together, we can continue building a healthcare environment where mental health is acknowledged, respected, and treated with the same importance as physical health.

New Research on Telehealth & Team-Based Care—What It Means for You
A newly published 2026 study explored how patients with chronic conditions experience telehealth visits (mostly phone visits) in primary care—and what works well or needs improvement.
Here’s what patients said, and why it matters for Outer Cape Health patients:
✅ What’s working well

Easier access to care: Telehealth saves time, travel, and energy—especially important for people with mobility challenges, chronic pain, or busy schedules.
Faster appointments: Many patients appreciated being able to speak with a provider sooner for follow-ups, prescription refills, or new concerns.
Feeling heard: When providers slowed down and actively listened on the phone, patients felt more supported and confident in their care.

⚠️ What patients found challenging

Not knowing who’s on their care team: Many patients weren’t aware that nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals could help manage chronic conditions—not just doctors.
Repeating the same information: Patients often felt like the “messenger,” having to repeat their history or test results between providers.
Unclear telehealth process: Some patients were unsure what to do if they missed a call or how follow-ups worked.

💡 What this means for you

Telehealth works best for routine follow-ups and stable conditions, but good communication and clear care coordination really matter.
Patients want care that feels connected and team-based, even when visits happen by phone.
Knowing who you can talk to—and when—can make care easier and less stressful.

At Outer Cape Health, we’re committed to making telehealth clear, coordinated, and patient‑centered. If you ever have questions about your care team, follow-ups, or telehealth visits, please ask—we’re here to help.

National Youth Violence Prevention Week

Strong mental health is key to preventing youth violence, especially on the Outer and Lower Cape, where isolation, seasonal stress, and limited youth spaces can impact young people’s well‑being.

When youth have support, connection, and access to mental health care, they are better equipped to manage stress, navigate conflict, and feel a sense of belonging. Prevention starts with listening, compassion, and making sure young people know they’re not alone.

At Outer Cape Health Services, we support youth and families with accessible, confidential care that prioritizes emotional health and resilience.

💙 Supporting mental health today helps create safer communities tomorrow.

Alcohol Awareness Month | April

Recovery & Support on the Outer and Lower Cape
April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how alcohol affects our health, families, and communities, especially here on the Outer and Lower Cape, where isolation, seasonal work, long winters, and high stress can take a toll.

In many Cape communities, alcohol is woven into social life and local culture. For some, drinking can slowly become a way to cope with loneliness, anxiety, physical pain, or the pressures of work and housing insecurity. Awareness starts with conversation and with knowing that help is available close to home.

At Outer Cape Health Services (OCHS), we offer Recovery Services designed for people at every stage of change, from those who are just starting to ask questions, to those actively working toward recovery. Our services include confidential screening, counseling, care coordination, and ongoing recovery support, delivered with compassion and respect.

💙 Recovery is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone.
Whether you’re concerned about your own drinking, supporting a loved one, or looking for recovery‑focused care, OCHS provides local, trusted support for the Outer and Lower Cape community.

How primary care is adapting—right here on the Outer Cape:

A recently published study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine describes how the rapid growth of urgent care is pulling patients away from traditional primary care, often at the cost of continuity, coordination, and long‑term health outcomes. The authors argue that primary care must adapt by offering the same convenience patients value—without losing what makes it special. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11606-026-10177-0

At Outer Cape Health Services, this transformation is already underway. OCHS is piloting team‑based care and expanding telehealth access so patients can get timely, flexible care while still benefiting from trusted relationships and comprehensive, coordinated services. By blending accessibility with continuity, OCHS is showing how primary care can evolve to meet today’s needs—while staying rooted in community-centered care.

Urgent care has rapidly expanded as a convenient alternative to both emergency departments and traditional primary care. Patients increasingly choose urgent care for its accessibility, shorter wait times, and flexibility. However, this shift exposes critical shortcomings in primary care—including ...
