Weight loss is often a goal of many as the new year begins. Often, media portrays weight loss as a means of being the healthiest version of ourselves. However, it is possible to engage in healthy behaviors while embracing and accepting your body as it is now. As we enter into this new year, how would it look for you to adopt a new, health promoting behavior without the pressure to do so for the sake of weight loss?

If you were ever curious about what working with a dietitian would entail, below you will find a snippet of the work I do with clients!

Review of client’s history:

Although our primary focus is on food, we know that what we eat does not occur in isolation from what happens surrounding food to include one's relationship with food, one’s medical conditions, sleep habits, and stress levels.

Client’s goals in meeting with RD:

What is important to you is also of importance to me! I always strive to listen to the client’s own insights and desires for their journey as looking intrinsically is key in establishing lasting change.

Collaboration to create a nutrition care plan:

This step is where the action begins to take place! Taking a client-led approach, we will develop a realistic yet specific plan to implement changes that are in alignment with your day to day lifestyle.

Who has jumped on the recent sourdough bandwagon? If you have, you know that in order for your sourdough starter to truly thrive, it relies upon consistent and reliable feedings. So it bears to ask the question: how much more do we as living and breathing humans thrive on consistency in nourishing of our bodies?

How can you consistently nourish your body this week? Maybe you prepare breakfast the night before to have ready for those busy mornings when you would likely be apt to skip breakfast altogether. Or maybe you include an afternoon snack because 7 hours without eating between lunch and dinner is just too long!

Fun Recipe Friday!

I have been making these crackers on repeat recently, and they have been a hit at gatherings (so I have others to back me up when I say this recipe is a good one)! You may not go back to store-bought crackers after trying this recipe, and it's a great way to use that sourdough discard you don't know what to do with!

Tangy, salty, crispy crackers, made with discarded sourdough starter.

As Eating Disorders Awareness Week comes to a close today, I wanted to end the week with this quote. It is not easy to face the many fears of recovery from an eating disorder or disordered eating. Gaining the courage to face one's fears looks different for everyBODY, and it is this courage that is going to allow us to find our true, authentic selves apart from the eating disorder.

It may take a lot of courage to reach out for help, but I promise you that your future self will look back on your self today with tremendous gratitude for taking that first step into recovery. Please reach out to me or another trusted professional to get the help that everyBODY deserves!

Today marks the beginning of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, with the theme being "Healing in Community". I believe true healing happens when connected with others, as we were designed to be in community with others. If you yourself are struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating, maybe it is time to reach out for help from a trusted individual. If you know of someone in your life who is impacted by an eating disorder, reach out to them this week to see how you can be there for them in their time of need. Small acts such as this can have a large impact.

This is too good not to share...just some reminders before the game tonight! Remember that one night of eating is just that, nothing more. I hope you can find enjoyment in the game AND the food!

As of this year, it is a requirement for registered dietitians to obtain a master's degree in order to sit for the RD exam to become credentialed as a RD. This translates to 6 or more years of school to become a RD! What many do not know is that in addition to the core nutrition curriculum, we also have a strong background in science courses such as organic chemistry/biochemistry and physiology.

What do you as a client get as a result of all of this schooling?

As RDs, we not only look at the food one is eating, but also the client's physical, mental, and social conditions to determine how to best guide you on your journey. We help clear up the chaos of the many diet claims on the market by providing our clients with research-backed, up-to-date nutrition recommendations.

Interested in working with a RD like myself? Feel free to contact me to connect and learn more about my services! I am currently seeing clients in person and via telehealth in the state of NE.

In this short clip, Dr. Gaudiani explains alternative means of "detoxing" at the start of the new year and it might be a different kind of detox than what many think of when they think of the word "detox". It's important to fuel our bodies adequately to allow for our body's natural detoxification systems (hello liver and kidney!) to do their job properly. Often when one is in a state of undernourishment, these organs become compromised and are unable to carry out their jobs fully.

What are some ways in which you can "detox" from stress in your day to day life to adequately support your body's natural detoxification processes?

Often diets focus on restriction rather than nourishment, which can lead to a mindset of scarcity vs abundance. Even amidst health conditions requiring changes in one's nutritional habits, I believe that focusing on what foods we can add to one's plate, rather than eliminate, leads to greater results in the long term.
