RP....What? RPW Therapy. What is it exactly?
Radial Pressure Wave (RPW) therapy, also known as shockwave therapy, delivers high-energy acoustic waves into the affected area to promote tissue regeneration and reduce pain without surgery or medication. Originally developed for breaking kidney stones (lithotripsy), RPW therapy has been adapted for musculoskeletal conditions, targeting tendons, ligaments, and muscles. The waves pe*****te the skin and create oscillations in the tissue, which stimulate blood flow, nutrient delivery, and new cell growth.
How RPW Therapy Works
During treatment, a technician applies a water-based gel to the skin and uses a handheld applicator to deliver pressure waves to the target area. The waves travel radially into the tissue, typically reaching depths of up to 2 inches, and generate microtrauma that triggers the body’s natural healing response. Each session usually lasts 5–10 minutes, and patients often require 3–6 sessions spaced several days apart. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with only mild discomfort, temporary soreness, or redness in some cases.
Conditions Treated
RPW therapy is effective for a variety of musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions, particularly chronic injuries. Common applications include:
Plantar fasciitis
Achilles tendinopathy
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
Shin splints
Chronic tendon or ligament injuries
It is especially beneficial for injuries that have persisted for more than three months and have not responded to conventional treatments.
