One of the most common things parents tell us is: "I knew something was different, but I didn't know what to do."

That uncertainty costs time. And in child development, time matters.
This checklist is not a diagnostic tool. It is a conversation starter. If several of these apply to your child consistently, across settings, and in ways that are affecting their life or learning a behavior assessment is the right next step.

An assessment doesn't label your child. It gives you a map. It tells you what's happening, why, and what can help.
The parents who act early give their children the longest runway.
If you have questions about what a behavior assessment involves, drop them below or reach out directly.

Many parents hear the term reinforcement when learning about Applied Behavior Analysis, but the concept is often misunderstood.

In behavior science, reinforcement simply refers to any consequence that increases the likelihood that a behavior will occur again in the future.

For children, reinforcement often occurs naturally during everyday interactions.

For example, when a child points to a toy and a caregiver gives them the toy, the successful communication reinforces the pointing behavior.

In structured teaching environments, reinforcement is used intentionally to help children learn new skills. When a child attempts a new behavior such as using words to request help or completing a task independently caregivers may provide praise, attention, or access to preferred activities.

Over time, these positive outcomes encourage the child to repeat the behavior.

Applied Behavior Analysis introduces a different approach: data-driven decision making.

Data collection allows educators to track patterns in behavior and learning objectively. Instead of asking whether a strategy “seems to be working,” teachers can examine measurable changes in student behavior over time.

Importantly, data collection does not have to be complex or time-consuming. Many classrooms use simple tally systems, checklists, or digital tracking tools that can be completed quickly during instruction.

Data is not just paperwork

It’s one of the most powerful tools educators have for supporting student success.

One of the most common challenges educators face is determining how to respond when a student engages in disruptive behavior.

Across classrooms, disciplinary responses often happen quickly because teachers must manage instruction, time pressure, and the needs of many students simultaneously.

Many students benefit from concise instructions, visual supports, or step-by-step guidance.

ABA reminds us that behavior is influenced by environmental variables. When educators adjust those variables, behavior often improves naturally.

Gentle parenting is often misunderstood.

It doesn’t mean letting children do whatever they want.
It doesn’t mean removing boundaries.
And it definitely doesn’t mean parenting without structure.

Gentle parenting is about teaching instead of reacting, guiding instead of controlling, and helping children understand their emotions instead of punishing them for having them.

Save this post so you can come back to it when you need a reminder, and share it with a parent who might need it too.

When conversations about classroom behavior arise, they often focus on individual teachers and the strategies they use with their students.

While teachers play a central role in classroom management, long-term success often depends on something larger: schoolwide systems supported by leadership.

Principals and administrators influence how behavior support systems function across an entire school environment. When leadership prioritizes evidence-based practices, teachers are more likely to implement consistent strategies that benefit students.

School leaders can support effective behavior systems in several ways.

Today is World Autism Day 💙

A day to pause, reflect, and remind ourselves that autism is not something to be “fixed” it is something to be understood.

Behind every behavior is a need, a feeling, or a way of communicating. And when we take the time to truly understand, we create space for growth, connection, and meaningful support.

Every child deserves to be seen for who they are, supported in ways that work for them, and given the opportunity to thrive at their own pace.

At BSI, we remain committed to promoting awareness, encouraging acceptance, and providing structured, evidence-based support for individuals and families navigating autism.

Understanding changes everything.

Let’s continue the conversation, not just today, but every day.

In Applied Behavior Analysis, we differentiate between behavior suppression and behavior change.

Shouting often suppresses behavior temporarily because it introduces an aversive stimulus. Students may stop what they are doing because they are startled or because they want to avoid further escalation.

However, the underlying variables driving the behavior remain unchanged.

If the behavior was maintained by escape from difficult work, attention from adults, or access to preferred activities, those functions are still present.

The result is predictable: the behavior returns.

Sustainable classroom management relies on teaching replacement behaviors and reinforcing appropriate responses, not simply stopping behavior in the moment.

When educators shift from reaction to analysis, classrooms become more predictable, calmer, and more effective learning environments.

Parents raising autistic children often describe moments when their child suddenly becomes overwhelmed.
The child may cry, drop to the floor, scream, or withdraw completely.

These experiences can be confusing and sometimes frightening for caregivers.

In Applied Behavior Analysis, we refer to many of these situations as dysregulation.

Dysregulation occurs when a child’s nervous system becomes overloaded and the child struggles to process environmental demands.

Triggers may include loud environments, unfamiliar routines, communication difficulties, or sensory sensitivities.

Understanding dysregulation helps parents respond more effectively.

With consistent routines, structured teaching, and positive reinforcement, many children gradually develop stronger regulation skills over time.
