🦓 Ehlers-Danlos Awareness Month & Occupational Therapy

May is Ehlers-Danlos Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to a group of connective tissue disorders that can impact joints, skin, and overall function.

For many individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), daily activities can be affected by:
• Joint instability or frequent subluxations
• Chronic pain and fatigue
• Decreased endurance
• Difficulty with everyday tasks

This is where occupational therapy can help.

OT focuses on supporting people in the activities that matter most by addressing real-life challenges. For individuals with EDS, this may include:

✔ Joint protection strategies to reduce strain and prevent injury
✔ Energy conservation techniques to manage fatigue
✔ Adaptive equipment recommendations for daily tasks
✔ Strengthening and stabilization to support joint function
✔ Activity modification to maintain independence without overexertion

Living with EDS often means learning how to balance activity and rest while still participating in meaningful life roles—and OT can be a key part of that support.

💬 If you or someone you know is living with EDS, what strategies have been most helpful in daily life?

May is a great time to reset and focus on what matters most in your daily life.

Occupational therapy helps turn everyday challenges into achievable goals—whether that’s improving balance, getting back to cooking, or managing daily routines more independently.

✨ This week, take a moment to ask yourself:
What is one activity you want to do more easily or confidently?

Small goals lead to meaningful progress.

🌷 Wrapping Up April in Occupational Therapy

As April comes to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on the small (and big) wins that happen every day.

Occupational therapy isn’t just about exercises—it’s about helping people return to the activities that make life meaningful. Whether that’s cooking a meal, getting outside, spending time with family, or simply feeling more confident moving through the day—those moments matter.

This month we focused on:
🌼 Building strength and independence
🌼 Preventing falls and improving safety
🌼 Supporting meaningful daily routines
🌼 Encouraging participation in everyday life

Progress doesn’t always look dramatic—but it shows up in the little things:
✔ Standing a little longer
✔ Walking a little farther
✔ Feeling a little more confident

And those “little things” add up.

💬 As we head into May, what is one goal or activity you’re hoping to improve or get back to?

As Occupational Therapy Month comes to a close, we want to highlight something that makes OT unique—meaningful activities.

Occupational therapy isn’t just about exercises. It’s about helping people return to the activities that bring joy and purpose.

That might include:
✔ Gardening
✔ Cooking family recipes
✔ Playing with grandchildren
✔ Walking the dog
✔ Participating in community activities

When people are able to engage in meaningful activities, it improves both physical and mental well-being.

Occupational therapy helps people get back to living the life they want.

Thank you for celebrating Occupational Therapy Month with us! 💙

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for older adults—but many falls are preventable.

During Occupational Therapy Month, we’re highlighting how OT supports fall prevention and safety at home.

Occupational therapists can help by:
✔ Identifying fall risks in the home
✔ Improving strength and balance for daily tasks
✔ Teaching safe mobility strategies
✔ Recommending adaptive equipment when needed
✔ Helping people stay confident and active

Preventing falls isn’t just about safety—it’s about maintaining independence and quality of life.
