Today, we unveiled “Higher Ground,” our plan to help East Kentucky flood survivors recover from the devastation of the July 28th flood. You will hear much more about our plan in the weeks ahead, but today, we, along with the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky (FAKY), Fahe, and H.O.M.E.S., Inc. announced our BIG IDEA at the Appalachian Big Ideas Festival: we’re building 16 homes for folks who lost their homes or had their homes so heavily damaged as to be uninhabitable! These homes are high quality, modest but spacious homes that are out of the floodplain and away from flood-prone areas. Construction has already begun!

Thanks to a $1.23 MILLION investment from FAKY and a $50,000 investment from Fahe (to build the first 2 homes), HDA will build 4 homes in each of its hardest hit counties: Breathitt, Knott, and Perry. Our friends at HOMES, Inc. will build 4 in Letcher County.

Of course, we know much more is needed, so this BIG IDEA only gets bigger: in these 4 counties, 1,900 homes were lost or were majorly damaged. Instead of 16 homes, we need to build 1,600! And that’s what we want to do. With the right amount of help in the coming months and years, we will; and we must, because people are living in tents and sheds, we’re in danger of losing our population, families need stability, and so much more - housing can’t wait!
