Debra Peck passed away on December 16th.
She lived across from the fire station for what we often say was “forever”—and in this case, it truly was. Deb and her family had been there as long as anyone could remember, and she was always kind to the Hazel Park firefighters.
If you were a rookie, you didn’t stay one for long once you met Deb. She’d rough you up a bit, crack jokes at your expense, and if you couldn’t handle it, she’d tell you straight up, you can’t handle Hazel Park. Honestly, she wasn’t wrong.
Deb was blue-collar through and through. She stood up for herself, spoke her mind, and never backed down, but she was also kind, selfless, and always found time to enjoy life and have fun. She was one of a kind, and she’ll be deeply missed.
She always had our backs. In fact, one day while we were sitting outside the station, a gentleman decided to loudly unload on us, throwing a few choice words at the firefighters. We let it go. We hope everyone likes us, but we know that’s not always the case.
Unfortunately for him, Deb was also outside.
That didn’t end well. You didn’t mess with, as she liked to say, “her” firefighters. She absolutely lit this dude up. After a full tongue-lashing, the guy kept it moving, and rightfully so. A group of grown men suddenly felt like kids again, watching their mom scold the bad kid on the playground.
That was Deb. She always had our backs. And whether you liked her or not, we had hers too.
We’ll miss "our" Deb. Our condolences go out to her family. Thank you for the memories, we won’t forget you.

Jack Timerick Moss, born 1922 in Kentucky, followed the Hillbilly Highway migration that shaped Hazel Park's culture and gave it the nickname Hazeltucky, during its peak in the late 40's to the Detroit area in search for a job in the booming auto industry. He met his wife Antoinette Verbanac, and settled down in Hazel Park, where he would live until his death in 2002.
