šŸŒž Summer Survival Tips for Pahrump Parents: Finding Balance When School’s Out šŸŒž
As summer approaches in Pahrump, parents face the challenge of keeping kids engaged while managing work and personal time. Here are some local resources and tips to help maintain balance and sanity during the break:
šŸ’” Establish a Flexible Routine
Children benefit from a predictable schedule. Consider setting general times for meals, chores, play, and rest. Flexibility is key—adjust as needed to fit your family's rhythm.
šŸŠ Check Out the Pahrump Community Pool
Located at 150 N Highway 160 in Petrack Park, the Pahrump Community Swimming Pool offers a 6-lane, 25-yard outdoor pool and a wading pool for younger kids. The season usually runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with open swim hours from noon to 6 p.m. and adult swim from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Entry is just 50 cents, and family passes are available.
šŸŽÆ Take Advantage of FREE Programs at Nye Communities Coalition (NyECC)
Located at 1020 E Wilson Road, NyECC provides completely free programs that support parents, teens, and families in our community:
Youth WERKS: Job training, career coaching, and paid internships for young adults ages 16–24.
Wellness Classes: Free yoga, qigong, nutrition, and mental health classes open to all.
Teen Outreach Program (TOP): A no-cost 12-session program focused on youth development, emotional wellness, and leadership skills.
For many local families facing financial stress, NyECC can be a lifeline—providing connection, education, and opportunity without adding to the cost of living. Call 775-727-9970 to learn more or to sign up.
🚌 Transportation Options for Families Without Reliable Vehicles
If transportation is a challenge, there are local services available:
Pahrump Valley Public Transportation (PVPT): Offers affordable rides within Pahrump and to surrounding areas. Local rides are $3 per trip, and services operate Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Reservations are required. For more information, call 775-751-6860.
Nye County Transportation Services: Provides transportation for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the general public. Services include local and long-distance medical transportation. Fees vary based on age and destination. For details, contact 775-482-7300.
NyECC Mobility Management: Assists with transportation coordination and may offer support such as gas vouchers for eligible individuals. Contact NyECC at 775-727-9970 for more information.
🧘 Prioritize Self-Care
Even just 10 quiet minutes a day can restore your energy. Whether it’s a cup of coffee before the kids wake up or stepping outside for a deep breath, small moments matter.
šŸ¤ Build a Support System
Don’t go it alone—reach out to neighbors, friends, or local parent groups. Consider swapping playdates or forming a rotating ā€œparent breakā€ plan. Community helps us all thrive.
Parenting through summer isn’t about doing it perfectly. It’s about surviving, connecting, and giving yourself and your kids a chance to breathe, grow, and enjoy the season.

Supporting children with ADHD isn’t about controlling behavior—it’s about connecting with the child behind the behavior....

Supporting children with ADHD isn’t about controlling behavior—it’s about connecting with the child behind the behavior. Parents and caregivers often come to therapy feeling defeated, unsure how to manage impulsivity, emotional outbursts, or difficulty following instructions. One approach that’s gained traction among therapists, educators, and families alike is the No-Drama Discipline framework developed by Dr. Daniel Siegel and Dr. Tina Bryson.
Instead of relying on punishment or escalating power struggles, No-Drama Discipline emphasizes connection before correction, a principle that’s particularly effective for kids with ADHD. Here are a few practical strategies grounded in neuroscience and clinical best practices:
1. Pause, Then Connect
Before reacting to a child’s disruptive behavior, take a moment to breathe. Children with ADHD often experience intense emotions and can feel misunderstood. A calm adult presence can help co-regulate their nervous system.
🧠 Brain Science Insight: The amygdala—the brain’s emotional alarm system—goes into overdrive in kids with ADHD. Connection helps calm the limbic system so they can access the thinking part of the brain (Siegel & Bryson, 2014).
2. Validate the Emotion, Set the Limit
You can say, ā€œI see how frustrated you are right now. It’s okay to be mad, but it’s not okay to throw things.ā€ This teaches emotional literacy while reinforcing boundaries.
šŸ’” Tip: Children who feel heard are more likely to cooperate. Reflective listening builds trust and promotes emotional self-awareness (Chronis-Tuscano et al., 2021).
3. Redirect with Curiosity
Instead of jumping straight to consequences, try asking:
"What happened right before this?" or
"What were you feeling when that happened?"
These questions invite self-reflection and model problem-solving—a core skill kids with ADHD need help developing.
4. Teach, Don’t Just Punish
Children with ADHD benefit from learning what to do, not just what not to do. Practice role-playing expected behaviors or using visuals to show routines. Repetition and consistency matter.
šŸ“š Evidence-based practice: Behavioral parent training, which includes positive reinforcement and skill-building, is one of the most effective interventions for children with ADHD (CDC, 2022).
5. Repair and Reconnect
No one—parent or therapist—gets it right every time. What matters most is repair. A simple, ā€œI overreacted earlier, and I’m sorry,ā€ models accountability and emotional regulation.
ā¤ļø Relational Repair: According to the Harvard Center on the Developing Child, responsive relationships are key to building resilience and executive functioning in children (2021).
At Next Chapter Therapy, we specialize in working with neurodiverse children and families. Whether through individual therapy, parent coaching, or school collaboration, we’re here to help you move from chaos to connection.
If you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, you're not alone—and support is just a call away.

Serve and return interactions—responsive, back-and-forth exchanges between a young child and a caring adult—play a key role in shaping brain architecture.

šŸ—³ļø Feeling Politically Drained? You're Not Alone.
Whether you're red, blue, purple, or somewhere in between—political stress is real. And no, it's not just in your head.
According to the APA, Americans across the political spectrum have reported increased anxiety, irritability, and burnout around elections, news cycles, and political conversations. Sound familiar?
So what can we actually do about it?
āœ… Limit the doomscrolling. Pick one or two trusted news sources and set time boundaries.
āœ… Set conversation boundaries. It’s okay to say, ā€œI can’t talk politics right now.ā€
āœ… Do something small and local. Action helps us feel empowered instead of helpless.
āœ… Take care of your nervous system. Go for a walk. Breathe. Unplug. Talk to a therapist.
āœ… Talk it out (in safe spaces). Venting doesn’t mean you're giving up—it means you're human.
šŸ‘‰ Reminder: You can care deeply about what’s happening and still protect your peace.
🌱 Sustainable change starts with emotional regulation.
šŸ’¬ Let’s support one another—without burning out.
