Thinking about sending your horse for spring training? Here are some things to think about beforehand!
✅Lameness Exams: Number 1 on my list! A lame or hurting horse will not make progress training (nor will I work a lame horse!), get the most of your horses time at the trainer and address any issues before sending them off!
✅ Vaccines/Dewormer: Not only is it basic management, but many places often require vaccines, we do here!
✅ Dentals: Have their teeth checked and done! Another basic husbandry item that is an important part of their health and education.
✅ Stomach Support: If your horse is not already on some sort of gastric support/ulcer preventative, discuss with your vet or trainer what they recommend! Training/new environments are stressful, and again a painful horse will not make the progress we aim for!
✅ Feet!!! - Have feet done and any shoeing or trimming changes done well before sending them off. If their first week or two of training is spent battling sore feet, you've lost consistency and progress already.
✅ Conditioning - This may not apply to all cases, but if you are able to get your horse started on conditioning before going to the trainer (whether that's riding, ponying, walker, any movement!) it again gives things a jumpstart!
As always there is not a one size fits all approach to horses, but it is a great idea to reach out to the trainer you are planning on sending your horse to ahead of time and see what they require beforehand and what they recommend to set your horse up for success! We want to see their progress just as much if not more, and setting them up for success from day 1 at the trainers makes for happy horses, happy owners, and a happy trainer!!
