After 29 years of service with Amberwell, Deborah Shelton is retiring.

Deborah spent her first nine years at Amberwell in Atchison before moving to Amberwell Hiawatha, where she has worked as a surgical technician in the Surgery Department since January 2006. Throughout her time in surgery, Deb has been a dedicated member of the team, playing an important role in keeping patients safe during procedures—work that often happens behind the scenes but is deeply valued by the surgeons and staff she supports.

Deb has responded to many middle-of-the-night emergencies and is known for always having a smile for everyone. She is a calming presence for patients and their families.

When asked about her favorite memory, Deb recalled being called in from home for three C-sections within a 24-hour period.

As she enters retirement, Deb is looking forward to spending more time with her family, going on camping trips, and exploring thrift stores.

Please join us in thanking Deb for her years of service and wishing her all the best in retirement.

This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to improving outcomes for mothers and babies through education, staff training, and consistent, patient-centered care.

Last Thursday, we celebrated our 2025 Amberwell Hiawatha service award recipients at our Annual Service Awards Banquet in Hiawatha. Recipients were recognized for reaching service milestones ranging from 5 years to 30 years.

These years represent more than time on the job. They reflect the values our team brings to work every day — caring for patients with quality and professionalism, supporting one another through teamwork, and building trust through integrity and respect.

We also honored our Leader of the Year, Amy Elliott, along with our 2025 DAISY Award recipients: Morgan Alvarado, Christina Grier, and Megan Volle.

Weighing 7 pounds, 13.2 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches long, baby Wendy Knoxsah was welcomed by Sydney and Virgil Knoxsah and was delivered by Kristy Selland, CNM at Amberwell Hiawatha.

Wendy’s parents, Sydney and Virgil Knoxsah, shared:

“All staff members were more than helpful, they were extremely supportive, and kind! After experiencing a stillborn last year at a different hospital, Amberwell staff members were empathetic and helped us through our grief during our entire experience bringing our new baby girl into the world. We are more than grateful for the generosity we were shown.”
