I'm so excited for this woman's talk at our event! She's a licensed counselor and coach and is going to be discussing how to find the magic in a busy life. Though that's especially important during the perinatal period, we can all use a little help with it, no matter what our circumstances.

You can find out more about her and her counseling, coaching, and consulting services at The Delightful Counselor on FB or at delightfulcounselingservices.com.

Cloth diapers can seem intimidating, but remember that you don't have to commit to them full time! For us it worked best to do cloth during the day and disposables at night (or if we travelled). If you're interested, there are many different ways to make it work for your particular lifestyle and values.

PSA as we're heading towards summer: babies may want to eat smaller meals more frequently during hot weather, but it is dangerous to give water to breastfed infants less than 6 months old. Over-hydration lowers the levels of certain nutrients in the blood, such as sodium, to unsafe levels. Breastmilk adapts to the baby's age, presence of pathogens, and also the weather, getting waterier when it is hot. Many studies have shown that babies get plenty of hydration from nursing.

Did you know...
The maternal mortality rate for black women is 2.6 times higher that it is for white women.

They are twice as likely to experience suicidal ideation during the postpartum period.

Preterm birth rates are 50% higher than they are for their white counterparts.

If affirmations like, "I am enough" feel overwhelming or too challenging, try softening them by saying something like, "What if I am enough?". Leave yourself space and time to imagine what that would be like. Explore what that brings up for you, and take a small, healing step towards accepting it.

Let me know if you have any questions about cloth diapering! One of my main pieces of advice is that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Because of our particular circumstances, we usually did disposable at night (and if we went on a trip). I also opted for disposables on some days when we knew we were going to be out of the house for a long time.

Postpartum doulas support the whole family, including older siblings! Adjusting to a little brother or sister is always going to be a big adjustment, but there are some things you can do to help ease the transition.

1. Give older siblings a small gift "from baby".

2. Involve siblings in caring for baby. They can fetch clean diapers, sing a lullaby, read the a book, etc.

3. Read books to prepare for baby's arrival and facilitate discussions about their feelings. Don't shame them about or discourage them from expressing negative emotions, though it can feel a bit heartbreaking. They have a lot to work through, and bottling it up won't help in the long-term. I have a list of books for siblings, grouped by age and subject (including age-appropriate answers to the question, "Where did the baby come from?"). If you'd like to check it out, leave a comment or send me a DM and I'll get it to you!

4. Carve out 15-20 minutes every day to give older children undivided attention.

5. Avoid saying no "because of the baby". This can be tricky, but try to give another reason or distract their attention.

Have more questions or want to talk about how doula support can fit in your postpartum plan? Send me an email at [email protected] or call/text at 828-222-4064.

Inferno: A Memoir of Motherhood and Madness by Catherine Cho ( )

"I was so preoccupied with the idea of losing my body, it had never occurred to me that I might lose my mind."

This book about the author's experience with postpartum psychosis was a challenging, hopeful, and enlightening read. Burke and Catawba county libraries both have copies, and the author narrates the audiobook, which I almost always enjoy best.

1 in 5 mothers are diagnosed with a Perinatal Mental Health Disorder, but the stigma and shame surrounding them means that many do not get the support they need. Thank you to the author for sharing her insight, challenges, and wisdom to raise awareness and remind others that they are not alone.

One of the most pressing questions that new parents have is, "Is my baby eating enough?" This can be especially nerve-wracking for breast-feeding parents who can't easily tell how many ounces baby gets. Here are a few signs to look out for as you're navigating the fourth trimester!

Remember that these are general guidelines, and your pediatrician may have different guidelines or recommendations for your specific situation (prematurity, illness, etc.). Always reach out to your health professional with any concerns.

Every baby is different, and this free app (developed and run by a non-profit) helps you track your little one's specific patterns!

There is no amount of movement that your baby should be reaching within an hour.

This is because each baby is DIFFERENT. While one baby may reach 10 kicks in 30 minutes, it may take another 2 hours.

Paying attention to YOUR baby's movements plays a crucial role in your and your baby’s health.

The FREE Count the Kicks app can make monitoring movements an easier (and enjoyable) experience!
