UPDATE FROM CHIEF ANDREA HOLLAND
Dec. 12, 2025 6:40 p.m.

Joint Investigation Determines Threat at the Highlands Episcopal Church of the Incarnation Was a Swatting Incident
Highlands, N.C. — December 12, 2025 —

Through a collective investigation conducted by the Highlands Police Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, we have determined that the reported threat towards the Highlands Episcopal Church of the Incarnation on December 11, 2025, was a hoax or “swatting” incident.

“Swatting is a malicious act that can involve placing false emergency calls to emergency responders, often reporting a false severe, ongoing crisis at a specific location” (https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2025-04/25_0325_fps_swatting.pdf). These false reports not only endanger the lives of first responders and the public but also divert critical resources.

While the investigation has deemed that this call was a false report, Highlands Police Department will remain vigilant in patrolling the downtown area, especially around the Episcopal Church and our local daycare centers and Highlands School. We take incidents like this call very seriously and the investigation into the origin of the call remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Highlands Police Department at 828-526-9431.

Thank you to the members of the Macon County Dispatch, Highlands Fire Department, Highlands Town Employees, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
