🪴The Importance of Prenatal Care and Choosing a Provider You Trust 🪴

More often than not people tell me that they found out they were pregnant and simply booked an appointment with the provider and the associated hospital closest to them. They were excited for their very first prenatal appointment, but left with a bitter taste in their mouth when the big first meeting with their provider was so quick, they barely had time to process or ask questions. Weeks and months pass and nothing changes.

This is NOT what prenatal care should look like. This is not the standard.

Choosing your birth environment and a provider who matches your beliefs, goals and strategies for birth is essential. You should be an active participant and advocate in your pregnancy and birth. A good provider will help you facilitate that.

So… how do you go about choosing a provider? You can start by:

- Learning and knowing the difference between an OB-GYN, a family medicine provider, and a Midwife.

- Asking yourself “What kind of birth am I envisioning?” Home birth, hospital birth, birth center? Medicated VS unmedicated birth? You don’t have to know all of these answers right away, but having a general idea can greatly influence the direction you go in for providers. Your provider should be working with you to facilitate this experience.

- Doing your research and asking around! Ask friends, family, new parent support groups, etc. what their experiences are with providers and facilities in the area.

- ASK QUESTIONS. Your provider works for and is hired by you. You can interview them as you would any other employee. Where do they attend births? How often will you see them? Do they support movement, eating and drinking, and changing positions during labor? Etc. Ask questions that will help you get a feel for the level of support they’ll be providing. Are you comfortable with their answers?

Prenatal appointments with your provider should leave you feeling prepared, comfortable, and safe. After all this will be the person (or people) assisting you in bringing your baby earth side. You deserve MORE than 15 minute appointments!

🪴Benefits of Having a Doula 🪴

I get asked this question so often; “What is a doula? Why do I need one?” Well…
Research shows that birthing people who have doulas attend their birth statistically:

• 25-39% lower risk of C-section
• 8-15% more likely for a spontaneous vaginal birth
• Reduce the use of pain medication by 10%
• Shorten labor by an average of 41 minutes
• 38% less likely for lower 5-minute APGAR scores
• 31% increased birth experience satisfaction rate

Doulas are essential to making sure birthing people are heard, supported, and informed. Some ways we may do this is by:

• Providing education on the stages of labor, and what you can expect to happen physically and emotionally to your body during these times.
• Preparing and educating you on the variations of labor scenarios and what your options are for those scenarios.
• Teaming up with your significant others, family, and providers to ensure a cohesive and uplifting birth environment.
• Providing physical support during labor with counter pressure, rebozo, hip squeezes, massage, breathing , and relaxation techniques.
•and so much more!

Contrary to popular belief doulas are not exclusive to one specific birth group. We support and respect all birthing people and choices. As of now there is no evidence to support a negative effect to having birth doula support so… what *aren’t* the benefits?! It’s never too late to hire a doula… ❤️

Hello everyone! I’ve been taking the last year to really discover who I am as a birth worker and what more I could do to support my community. So after some serious social media revamping, soul searching, and a hell of a lot of births later… I’m back baby! ✨
For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet I’d love to tell you a bit about my doula self.

Hellooooo all 👋 My name is Aubrey Hunnicutt and I am a Certified Birth & Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, and Breastfeeding Counselor.
Birth is my passion and I feel so incredibly honored to have a career that allows me to initiate real change within the world of birth.
I have 2 children of my own who are the light of my life- I believe they largely influenced me becoming a doula. My experiences with pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with both children were very difficult… but I tell all my clients I went through what I did so no one has to do the same (at least not on my watch)! My own births ignited a spark in me.
I knew I had to spread word to other birthing people that we could take control of our experiences.
I’m an avid believer that beautiful births exist on a spectrum and that informed decisions are great ones! I support any and all birthing people in many different environments.

My goals for this platform are to:
-showcase my approaches and ideas surrounding birth, pregnancy, and postpartum.
-Shed light on the more stigmatized aspects of birth, pregnancy, and postpartum.
-Connect with fellow birth workers and build a network of accepting like minded individuals.
-Honor and respect the physiological birth process
-Hold space for anyone in all walks of parenthood
-Reach more birthing people to educate and prepare to have an empowered experience.
I hope you’ll all stay along for the ride! ✨

Black Maternal Health Week starts today, so let’s remember to lift black birth workers/birthing people up and hold space for what they have to say. Use your platforms especially this week to amplify black voices.

The National Birth Equity Collaborative states that the purpose of BMHW is to:

“ - Deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the U.S.;

-Amplify community-driven policy, research, and care solutions;

-Center the voices of Black Mamas, women, families, and stakeholders

-Provide a national platform for Black-led entities and efforts on maternal health, birth, and reproductive justice; and

-Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.”

Black birthing people suffer a mortality rate 3 times that of a white birthing person. Black pregnant people are also more likely to receive poor quality health care largely due to structural racism and implicit bias. It is important that we shed light on these horrific disparities. I’ll be linking below some black voices to amplify this week and ways to help show support. Thanks everyone.

Take time to rest & reset! Sometimes things pile up after a busy week (or even a busy few weeks) and since we draw energy from our surroundings it can be so draining when things are in disarray. So, take time pouring into your own glass. Put some music on, make a super unnecessarily fancy chore list (aka procrastinate but only for a little bit), chip away at the list, and then spend time relaxing in your newly reset space. I promise you’ll feel so relieved! Off to follow my own advice now lol. Hope everyone has a safe and productive work week 💕✨
