The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated their breastfeeding recommendations. They continue to recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, however are now recommending continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, for 2 years or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant!

➡️Let’s talk about NI**LE SHIELDS 🛡

Ni**le shields can get a bad rap. Unfortunately, they are often handed out like candy in the hospital to new moms without a scheduled follow up.

Ni**le shields can be an effective to get baby to the breast. Sometimes a ni**le shield can be the difference between a baby feeding at the breast and not feeding at the breast. I’ve seen ni**le shields be a lifeline for several breastfeeding dyads. ‼️It’s critical, though, that moms receive lactation support when using a ni**le shield‼️

Here’s a few things to remember about shields—
✔️Try to avoid during the first 24-48 hours of baby’s life
✔️Shields are meant to be used temporarily—they are not a long term solution
✔️They always need the support of an IBCLC to address the issue of why a shield is needed in the first place!

It’s also important that the shield be fitted properly so it doesn’t do more harm than good.

Need some guidance on whether a ni**le shield may be a helpful tool for you? Having trouble weaning from a ni**le shield? Reach out, I’d love to help!

Let’s talk about AEROPHAGIA!

It simply means to swallow air 💨.

Some symptoms of aerophagia include:
✔️distended belly
✔️excessive gas
✔️hiccups
✔️colic behaviors
✔️ general discomfort
✔️spitting up

In babies, a dysfunctional swallow, uncoordinated suck, swallow, breathe pattern, poor latch, tongue restrictions, poor positioning, or tension can cause baby to swallow more air.

With an optimal latch, the lips are flanged and sealed around the breast/bottle ni**le. The tongue needs to extend, groove and cup around the ni**le to pull it into the mouth. If the tongue can’t hold suction on the breast (or bottle ni**le) or the lips can’t make a seal, air can enter.

A study by Scott Siegel in 2016 showed a correlation in infants with tongue ties and reflux. Out of 1000 babies with tongue tie and reflux, 52% had improvements in symptoms with release of tongue tied and no longer needed medication.

If your baby is experiencing symptoms of aerophagia and you’re looking for more answers, reach out to a skilled provider for a functional oral assessment and support! Feeding your baby doesn’t have a be a struggle 🖤.
