If you have an aversion to farm-fresh eggs, it’s worth taking a moment to think about where most store-bought eggs actually come from. Local farms and homesteaders raise their chickens with genuine care and with the animals’ best interests at heart. We lose sleep over sick or injured birds. We spend our own time and money predator-proofing coops and runs to keep our animals safe. We research and invest in the best, most nutritious feed to support their overall wellbeing. We know their habits, their quirks, their names, and their personalities. I can tell you which nesting box the pullets prefer, what their favorite treats are, which color egg each hen lays, and even what her egg song sounds like.

In my area, most of us sell eggs for about $5 a dozen—and we don’t make a profit. What that price truly reflects is the labor and daily commitment involved: regularly cleaning coops, managing bedding and waste, making multiple daily trips during the winter to ensure water doesn’t freeze, shoveling snow to keep access to coops and runs, and building, repairing, and upgrading extra infrastructure to protect our birds from predators. That doesn’t include grit, oyster shell, mealworms, nesting pads, pine chips, horse bedding pellets to manage moisture, or the many other supplies and equipment we regularly need. What we do gain is the peace of mind of knowing our birds are well fed, properly cared for, and not pumped full of steroids or antibiotics. I love knowing I can take one more step to ensure my family is getting better nutrition.

Factory farms, on the other hand, house chickens indoors in confinement for their entire lives until they’re sent to the slaughterhouse—often by year two—to be turned into dog food or exported processed meat because the meat is considered low quality. “Cage-free” does not mean free-range or pasture-raised. And then there’s a picture of my own little spoiled menaces, who truly have no idea how lucky they are—lol.

All of this is to say: please think before you snub farm-fresh eggs. They are genuinely better for you (there are clinical studies that prove this), and they allow you to know where some of your food comes from and the conditions in which the animals providing it are raised.

💚 A Note from The Rusty Rake Homestead 💚

This weekend will look a little different for us at the farm stand.

I will not be taking pre-orders for this weekend, with the exception of eggs. As always, I will still post what I have available on Friday for pre-order and pre-pay, with Sunday pickup from noon–2 PM.

This change is because I will be spending time with family and friends at a Celebration of Life for a dear family friend, Robin Mosley, who recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

Robin was a pillar in the Holt community, which is the community I live in and deeply care about. He was a respected businessman, a mentor, a man of strong faith, and someone who truly invested in the people around him. Through his work and his generosity, he helped build not just businesses, but people—especially young men—by teaching them skills, work ethic, and reminding them that their lives had purpose.

Robin loved to talk—especially about his faith, Michigan State basketball, golf, and most of all, his grandchildren. If you knew him, you know how deeply he cared for others and how freely he shared the love of Jesus Christ.

He was more than a community supporter—he was a friend, and his loss will be felt by many.

Thank you all for your understanding, grace, and continued support of The Rusty Rake Homestead as I take this time to honor a life that meant so much to so many.

Rest in peace, Robin. You will be greatly missed. 🌿
