🌲 Merry Meet: Hemlock?

There are two different plants called “hemlock,” and their lore often overlaps:

1. Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) – a highly toxic herbaceous plant, infamous in Greek history for being the poison that killed Socrates.
2. Hemlock Tree (Tsuga species) – an evergreen conifer native to North America and parts of Asia. Unlike poison hemlock, the tree is not toxic and has long been used by Indigenous peoples for food, medicine, and spiritual practice.

For lore and herbal magic, the **tree** (Tsuga) is usually what’s meant.

---
🌎 Where It Grows

🌲Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis):
Found in the cool, shaded forests of the northeastern U.S. and Canada.

🌲Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla):
Thrives in the Pacific Northwest’s temperate rainforests.
Prefers moist, shaded environments with rich soil, often along streams, ravines, and deep forests.

---

Folklore & Lore of Hemlock

🌲Tree of Shelter:
In Native American traditions, hemlock boughs symbolized **protection and warmth**, often used for bedding or winter shelters.
🌲Purification:
Burning hemlock needles as incense was believed to cleanse a space of negative energies.
🌲Threshold Tree:
Hemlock groves were sometimes considered **liminal places** — a border between worlds, where spirits and humans might meet.
🌲Contrast of Names:
The poisonous “hemlock herb” gave the tree an aura of mystery and caution. In folklore, this duality made the tree both **protective and feared**, a guardian of hidden wisdom.

🌿 Uses in Holistic Healing & Magic Herbalism

Holistic / Traditional Uses

*(Tree only — not poison hemlock)*

💜Tea from young needles:** High in vitamin C; historically used by Indigenous peoples to treat colds, scurvy, and coughs.
💜Poultices of bark/needles:** Applied to wounds or sore muscles.
💜Aromatic branches:** Used in steam baths for clearing congestion and cleansing the body.

Magical / Herbalism Uses

💚Protection & Warding:** Branches hung above doors or windows to repel negativity.
💚Grounding & Strength:** The deep shade of hemlock groves symbolizes rootedness and endurance — making it a powerful ally for meditation or grounding herbal rituals.
💚Spirit Work:** Because of its “liminal” lore, hemlock can be incorporated into rituals for communication with ancestors or seeking hidden knowledge.
💚Herbal Bundles:** Combined with protective herbs like mugwort or rosemary, hemlock boughs are used to safeguard sacred spaces.

What is a HAGSTONE?

🔽🔽🔽🔽🔽
A Hagstone (also called an adder stone, witch stone, or holey stone) is a naturally occurring stone with a hole worn all the way through it. The hole is not carved — it forms through centuries of erosion by running water, wind, or other natural forces. Because the hole is made by the elements, hagstones are considered “nature-born” charms rather than manmade ones.

---

Folklore & Lore

Hagstones appear in folklore across Europe, especially in the British Isles, and carry a sense of mystery and protection:

💚Protection from Witchcraft & Ill Will:
In old English and Celtic traditions, hagstones were hung over doorways, barns, or beds to keep away “the hag” (evil spirits, nightmares, curses).

💚Seeing the Unseen:
Looking through the hole was believed to grant sight into the fairy realm, the spirit world, or to reveal witches in disguise.

💚Sailors’ Talismans:
Fishermen in Cornwall and Wales tied hagstones to their boats to protect against storms and sea witches.

💚Healing Energy:
Some traditions say hagstones carry the cleansing, protective power of the water or earth that shaped them.

Uses in Holistic Healing & Magic Herbalism

In herbal and folk-magic traditions, hagstones are not herbs themselves, but they amplify and protect herbal work:

💜Amulets:
Carried in a pocket, worn on a cord, or tied to a bundle of herbs to ward off negative energy.

💜Herbal Protection Bundles:
Hung with dried herbs like rosemary, mugwort, or vervain over a doorway to guard a home.

💜Healing Charm:
Placed on the body during meditation or alongside healing herbs to “filter out” harmful energies.

💜Dream Magic:
Hung by the bed with herbs like lavender or chamomile to ward off nightmares and invite restful sleep.

💜Ritual Tool:
Used as a focus stone in herbal spellwork — looking through the hole while visualizing intention, then pairing it with an herbal infusion or smoke cleansing.

💜Grounding Anchor:
Because they are formed through slow, natural processes, hagstones are often used to anchor energy during ritual or meditation with herbs.

I’ve had a few really great questions about what the rebrand is going to offer-
So as I get plans into motion, a lot of what you will see will be pop-up classes and products from the old MHC realm.
I will be operating under a new name, and that will be revealed as soon as I secure the domain for it.
I’m hoping to focus on personal consultations, and I’m open to group settings as well. Think like a Tupperware party but we all make natural products and learn about herbs. I’m currently working on a business model for what that will look like in detail.
I have two written items- one is a recipe/ workbook for Fermentation, another is a yearly planner. Once those are finalized I will have them up for you to preview.
In 2026 I hope to be back in operation from my home office and available to make custom products. Next Spring I will be dedicating myself to growing herbs to sell in various quantities.

Nothing major will occur until after our festival for the community garden is over. Thank you for your support 💜
