History of Hospice of Homer

Hospice of Homer was started in 1985 after Jean Hatfield, a community member experienced the caring support of a hospice program in another part of the country. She decided that we needed the same level of care in the Homer area. To lay the groundwork for the program, Jean formed a committee of community members, many of whom had experienced firsthand the stress of car

ing for a terminally ill family member. The founders envisioned a personal, neighbor-helping-neighbor program. Today Hospice continues to live out that vision offering a coordinated program of non-medical, supportive care that encompasses the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and emotional needs of those facing life-threatening illness or the transition process of dying. In 2000, Hospice of Homer added the Volunteer Visitor and Phone Friends Program. Hospice of Homer relies on community involvement and support. The Hospice Board of Directors oversees the management of the organization with volunteer members drawn from all parts of the community. There are two part-time paid staff persons coordinating direct client services, public outreach efforts, training of volunteers, the medical equipment loan program, support groups, fundraising efforts and office administration. Trained volunteers provide the majority of direct care services. Hospice of Homer Service Area

Hospice of Homer (HOH) serves the southern Kenai Peninsula from Ninilchik south to Homer. HOH also serves Seldovia, Halibut Cove, Nanwalek and Port Graham across Kachemak Bay, which are accessible only by air or boat. We provide a full range of services to Anchor Point, Ninilchik, Homer and the surrounding area with limited services provided to areas across the Bay.

Caring for Someone with Dementia: Helpful Tips for Everyday Moments

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be challenging, but small changes can make a big difference. Here are some gentle, practical tips:

1. Keep Communication Simple
Use short sentences, speak slowly, and give time for replies. Kindness and patience go a long way.
2. Create a Calm, Familiar Environment
Reduce noise and clutter. Familiar objects, photos, and routines help bring comfort and reduce confusion.
3. Establish Consistent Daily Routines
Predictability helps relieve anxiety. Try to keep meals, activities, and bedtime at the same times each day.
4. Focus on Abilities, Not Limitations
Encourage what your loved one can do. Celebrate small successes and moments of connection.
5. Use Gentle Redirection
If frustration or confusion arises, try shifting attention to a calming activity instead of correcting.
6. Support Healthy Basics
Ensure regular meals, hydration, fresh air, and gentle movement when possible.
7. Engage with Simple, Enjoyable Activities
Music, folding towels, looking through photo albums, gardening, or sorting objects can be soothing and meaningful.
8. Watch for Signs of Stress (Both Theirs and Yours)
Take breaks when needed. Caregiving is demanding and your well-being matters too.
9. Seek Support
Connect with friends, family, or local caregiver groups. You’re never alone on this journey.
10. Lead With Compassion
Dementia can change behavior, but the person you love is still there. Kindness and understanding make every day brighter.
