Hi Friends,

After shredding 23,000 lbs of cardboard, our machines are in need of repairs. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the programs we've been running at local non-profits, schools and community gardens have stopped.

We want to avoid this problem in the future. So, we're raising money through our friends at Mā'ona Community Garden to get 8 shredding machines to Big Island and LEVEL UP! We want to double down on our investment and go for 80,000 lbs shredded into soil, mulch and other substitutes for our farmers.

You can help by sharing this post, donating, calling your rich uncles and aunties or send it to your local foundation.

Thanks,
Evan, Chantal and the Team!

Aunty Chantal has NO shreds right now :/ we need to get her her own machines. We need to get a bunch of people their own machines, do you want to help?

It’s almost two years into piloting a decentralized “Cardboard to Soil” system. We’ve been to

to shred over 23,000 lbs of cardboard. Who’s up to go for 80,000 lbs? 🙋🏽‍♂️

We’d just started making these pots. There’s a lot of plastic in agriculture, from nurseries to plastic mulching. We’re hoping these test pots work out well enough to make compostable pots out of recycled materials.

Manufacturer says replacement parts are 6 weeks out. At least.

What do you do when a machine breaks? How do we decarbonize a food system? What kind of grease is this?

2 machines went down recently. A couple of projects involving schools, community gardens and businesses stopped.

Updates coming.

350 lbs of local cardboard shredded for farm mulch and compost production at the Hamakua Harvest Market last weekend!

Piece by piece, we put it together.

It’s a bit crazy outside. Weather changes, conflict, hunger and more all dance on the edges of our perception.

What do we do in response? Who do we define ourselves as through the actions that we take? In professional careers, in community lives or in a myriad of other ways.

Maybe, it’s just knowing that the sheep-child doesn’t give a s**t about your camera, whether you’re a for-profit or non-profit or what you’re wearing.

I hope you have good soil, water and people wherever you are. 🎋

One of our community partners is building a garden. Swipe to see how they used perforated cardboard 😎

The ground is hard, rocky and in the Kailua Kona sun. There’s not a lot of organic matter to work with and it’s next to a parking lot.

So, Aunty laid a 3-4 inch thick layer of perforated cardboard as a base. It took her 1-2 hours.

We’ve seen high levels of water retention, inviting habitat for worms and microbes, and it’s easy for roots to poke into.

It got covered with mulch then compost. All that could have gone to landfill or Taiwan but we’re using it to feed, heal and educated people instead 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is a Yuzu sapling from . See the bottom? It’s a bit of our shredded cardboard stuffed into the bottom before the compost.

When I pulled this tree out, the tap root from the yuzu was sunk deep into it and there were a couple of fat earthworms happily snuggled into the layers.

After carefully splitting the chunk of soft, soaked cardboard, it was gently pushed around the bottom of the hole the tree was planted into.

“When you love your money, you lose nothing; when you lose your health, you lose something; when you lose your character, you lose everything.”

Meyer Lansky’s advice to his grandson.

Surviving, and thriving, within the limits of natural world is part of our character as human beings. Things look tough right now but we’ll sort it out :)
