This year, the Gold Humanism Honor Society at JABSOM will be holding its annual GHHS Humanism Week from February 15, 2016 to February 19, 2016. We hope that you will join us this week in spreading compassionate care throughout hospitals and clinics throughout Hawaii.
Here is a list of the various events that will be held during the JABSOM GHHS Humanism Week:
Monday, February 16, 2016:
1st Annual Giving Tree Toy Drive for Kapiolani Child Life Services:
Description: Play is essential during a child's hospital stay and donations will allow children to engage in bedside and playroom activities to preserve childhood in the hospital setting. A "Giving Tree" will be put up in the JABSOM library and next to it will be heart-shaped wishes of specific toys children are requesting for. When you commit to an item please write your name on the heart and place the heart onto the giving tree. We hope that within the next two weeks, we will see our "Giving Tree" grow from the generosity of our JABSOM faculty, staff, and students.
Location & Time: JABSOM Medical Education Building, Starts on Monday, February 15 and ends on Friday, February 26
Tell Me More Campaign:
Description: A GHHS initiative to personalize medical patients. After patient consent is obtained, JABSOM medical students spend time learning about patients’ personal stories and create signs to display in their patients’ rooms to share that knowledge with other care providers.
Location & Time: This campaign will be done throughout hospitals on Oahu (Queen’s medical center, Kuakini medical center, Kapiolani medical center) from February 15 through February 19.
Wednesday, February 17, 2016:
Pin and Pledge Table & Humanism Inspiration Wall:
Description: Come to GHHS’s table to share your H.E.A.R.T. of Humanism story to add to the Humanism Inspiration Wall. Students and faculty are encouraged to share a personal story or example focusing on one or all of the aspects of H.E.A.R.T. - Honesty, Empathy/Excellence, Altruism, Respect, Trust. There will be magazines, construction paper, and craft supplies there to make your stories as aesthetically pleasing as you would like. Those that submit stories will also be given a Humanism in Medicine pin that they can wear throughout the week to show support for Humanism Week.

Thursday, February 18, 2016:
HUGS Card-Making:
Description: A birthday card-making activity for seriously ill children part of the HUGS (Help, Understanding & Group Support Organization)
Location & Time: JABSOM, MEB 304, 08:00 AM - 05:30 PM
“Code Black” Film Screening:
Description: A documentary showcasing young doctors-in-training as they wrestle with their ideals and realities of saving lives in one of the busiest emergency rooms in the country, featuring former JABSOM graduate, Danny Cheng, M.D.
Location & Time: JABSOM Auditorium (MEB 315), 05:30 PM - 07:30 PM
“How do I protect the ideals I came into medicine with?”:
Description: Discussion and reflection following the film.
Location & Time: JABSOM Auditorium (MEB 315), 07:30 PM - 08:00 PM
