A few years ago, someone asked if any of our students’ children had started practicing yoga with us. The answer is “yes”!

This past week, Sammy joined us! I first met Sammy in 2016 when she was still in her mama’s belly – [Photo taken on an old iPhone, back before the cameras were any good!]

Here’s Sammy with Cathy Louise during Fall Break 2025.

In August 2025, our oldest kids’ friend from elementary school days, , began practicing regularly in our Mysore class.

And, honorary mention goes to Zen and his dad, . Zen began practicing with us back in 2014 when he was just seven years old.

It was inevitable that this would happen, especially since we’ve been running our yoga program in Honolulu since 2002. It’s exciting to see the next generation of students beginning to learn with us. It’s truly an honor!

Thank you to Megumi & Sammy and Daniel & Zen for letting me share these photos from practice .

It was wonderful to teach my “Yoga for Women Workshop” on September 13, 2025. Twenty-four beautiful women attended. There is something incredibly powerful about bringing together a group of women, for a full day, to just be together, learning, talking and sharing.

Mahalo, M&R for hosting us in your beautiful home and letting me share the photos and videos here. And for closing the workshop with your crystal bowl playing.

If you missed out this time, I will be teaching the workshop again in the near future. DM me if you are interested. I’ll keep everyone updated as plans are made for the next gathering.

Yoga has made me the woman that I am and developed my understanding and compassion for myself. And 2025 seems to be the year that I’m deeply comfortable with where I am at.

I started thinking of the idea of teaching a “Yoga for Women Workshop” over 20 years ago, just after I had my first baby. I started yoga in my mid-twenties and each decade I feel like I have defied so many of the myths that I had heard about “What happens to a woman when she gets older!”.

I have had to revamp the workshop many times. Some of the things I was teaching were just theory and study. When I went through a phase myself there were corrections to be made in what I was teaching. I have journeyed through from my 20’s through perimenopause, menopause and am now post-menopause and I love being where I am right now. It’s been a wild ride!

Keep breathing, be kind to yourself, find a few moments in your day to stop, know that you are not alone in any struggle that you are having, it is real, you can share and reach out if you need an ear. I am here to listen and help in any way that I can.

Sarah Osborne started apprenticing with us in September 2024 and over the last nine months she has assisted every morning in the second session, after doing her own practice first. Glen and I have enjoyed sharing what we know and seeing her grow and gain confidence in adjusting and teaching in the Mysore space.

We’d like to congratulate her on doing such a great job as Purple Apprentice #13.

Sarah is diligent, courageous, learned fast and I’m proud of all the great work that she has done.

I know everyone will be sad that she’s not around all the time but she’s not going anywhere, she’ll still be on her mat practicing and helping with cover when we are away. I was telling one of the students that you may still find her assisting us from time to time, as the learning never ends.

I’d also like to thank all the students for welcoming Sarah into the Purple Mysore room and being patient as she learned how to do some of the more complex adjustments. Without you we could not give this opportunity to the apprentices.

The first month or so Sarah did a lot of down dogs and then slowly learned more and more. Here are a few moments over the last few months of Sarah adjusting and being adjusted. Today July 1, 2025, her final day, we learned Tic Tocs with 🫶🏼

Three posts that deeply touched me this week (all shared on stories):
1. Always grateful to read your reflections on Sharathji. Thank you for sharing such heartfelt memories.
2. A beautiful reminder that, slowly and methodically, we can rediscover our practice - with grace, strength, and acceptance - no matter the circumstances we’re in.
3. So happy to hear you’re finally free. I’ve thought of you often over the past few years. I hope this experience brings you strength, and that you move forward with lightness and peace. Sending love.

Come & practice with us daily this week.
We’re open everyday. Everyone’s welcome!

Yoga for Women Workshop
Saturday, September 13, 2025
$160

Cathy Louise presents a one-day workshop in Honolulu designed to inform and empower women with knowledge that relates to their experience of yoga. This is not your mother’s birds and bees lesson, nor is it a clinical discussion with your doctor; it’s a frank exploration of a woman’s life, from puberty through menopause, and the effects these stages have on your practice, as well as how you live yoga off the mat.

Cathy Louise has been teaching yoga for 34 years. She had her first child at 38, then twins at 40. She’s now 59 and the consistent element through all these years has been her yoga practice. She loves to help women find their power and know that they are not alone in their journey. It’s important to know that your own female experiences are not bad or negative, they are shared by many women. Yoga shows us how to adapt, be compassionate, and loving to ourselves.

The discussion will be wide-ranging, including menstruation, pregnancy, peri-menopause, menopause, body image, nutrition, sexuality, health issues such as fibroids, breast cancer, osteoporosis, hysterectomy, and much more. Bring your questions and stories to share. Each session will include a yoga practice.

8:00–10:00am Session One
Entering womanhood: puberty, menstrual cycle, body image, nutrition, vitality. Yoga practice: energize and strengthen.

10:30am–12:30pm Session Two
Exploring midlife: sexuality, fertility, work and home, creativity. Yoga practice: balancing energy.

1:30–4:00pm Session Three
Accepting aging: perimenopause, menopause, body types, medical issues, wisdom. Yoga practice: adaptation, maintaining strength, and quiet mind

Held at a private location on Poipu Drive, Portlock, Honolulu. Plenty of free street parking.

Space is limited, please register early to secure your place.

1990, for my 25th birthday Beryl Bender Birch gave me an Om pendant necklace. was my first Ashtanga Yoga teacher. I loved the yoga and I LOVED the gift. Over the years, the necklace always reminded me of her.

2010, right before my 45th birthday, I was walking into Kalama Beach Park with my kids, stepped on to the sand, whipped my T-shirt off and suddenly found my necklace in my hand, just the chain. I panicked and retraced my steps to see if I could find the pendant. After failing to find it, I walked over to Glen and told him it was lost. I cried and remember saying that something must have decided that after 20 years of wearing the necklace I didn’t need it anymore.

I mourned the loss of the pendant. It represented years of yoga, sweat, effort, learning and, more importantly, it represented Beryl.

2013 we invited Beryl to teach at Purple Yoga Hawaii. I hadn’t seen her in over 20 years and it was a beautiful reunion. I recounted the story of losing the Om pendant and we reminisced about the old days. I realized that the age that I was, 48, was the age that Beryl was when I first started being her student.

A few weeks ago, Glen gave me a chain and said I should find an Om to go with it. We scoured the internet and found one on eBay. It is the exact same design of the one Beryl gave me!

As I wear the necklace now I’d like to believe that it’s the same pendant; that someone found it at the beach, and years later listed it on eBay. I’ll keep this one safe.

Cathy Louise in then and now photos. Thank you for recreating the feel of the 1995 photo.

Bandhas Workshop with Cathy Louise

Well done everyone who attended Bandhas Workshop on March 23, 2025 held

Cathy Louise thanks you all for asking great questions, giving her quizzical looks, having a few “ah-ha” moments and looking within to see what you are doing with engaging mula, uddiyana bandha and connecting it to your breath!

It’s time to put into practice what you learned. Keep asking more questions and don’t be afraid to veer off bandha course if you aren’t sure if you are engaging them. Everything is a learning experience!

Thank you for assisting Cathy Louise during the workshop.

It’s Bandha Time in Honolulu! Don’t miss out on this in-depth look at uddiyana and mula bandha.

“Engage your bandhas,” says the teacher. But do you really know what you are engaging and how vital bandhas are for an effective yoga practice? Cathy Louise presents the theory, sharing practical knowledge as well as anatomical diagrams of the pelvic floor and abdomen, and simple exercises to directly connect you with these areas. She draws on her own experience of losing her bandhas during two pregnancies, and regaining control of them after both vaginal and c-section deliveries.

This is an interactive workshop so come prepared to do yoga. Please avoid eating at least 2-3 hours before the workshop.

This workshop is highly recommended for anyone practicing Ashtanga Yoga. Beginners and experienced practitioners of all vinyasa-based styles of yoga are welcome.

will assist Cathy Louise during the workshop.

Our Story

We are dedicated to a progressive way of teaching, with a long-term view of improving our students' physical, mental and spiritual well-being. We are mindful of each person's needs and abilities, and promote a supportive and friendly environment that's fit for inspired learning and sound practice. So why do yoga? A regular practice creates a more flexible, stronger, lighter and fitter body. It also reduces stress, focuses the mind and heightens a sense of connection. As you advance in yoga, you explore and work with the subtle, energetic body. Yoga's ultimate goal, through the meditative practices, is self-realization. Please call or email if you have any questions, or drop by the studio. Namaste, from the owners, Cathy Louise Broda and Glen Butcher.
