lindachamberlain@comcast.net Based in HoodRiver, OR, The Fistula Project at Kitovu Hospital is an unaffiliated community group that strives to provide fistula repair and other assistance to women in Uganda. This is done through grassroots efforts, fundraising and awareness. Small groups of project participants travel to Uganda annually to distribute blankets, hygiene kits, knitting and crochet supplies and to teach the women (fistula patients) how to knit and crochet. Your generous and contined efforts and contributions help The Fistula Project at Kitovu Hospital fulfill the following objectives:

- Fistula Repair Surgeries
- Hygiene Kit supplies (reuseable menstrua pads)
- Fabric for skirts and dresses for fistula patients
- Knitted and crocheted blankets for fistula patients
- Knitting and crochet supplies for fistula patients
- Education and awareness about fistula

Why knitting and crochet? Knitting and crochet is both an activity and distraction for the women while they await their surgeries and during recovery. It is also a skill that will enable the women to make clothing and household items for themselves and their families; as well as a means for generating income. Obstetric Fistula occurs during obstructed or prolonged labor which creates a tear between the vagina and bladderor rectum or both, often resulting in the death of the infant. Linda is going back to Kitovu Hospital in Uganda during a Fistula Repair camp and we’d love your help collecting KNITTING NEEDLES!

Linda and her group travel to Uganda with bins of yarn and knitting needles to teach the women at Kitovu Hospital getting fistula surgery how to knit. This activity, embraced despite language barriers, gives all the women an opportunity to connect with each other, learn a new skill, and to pass time anxiously awaiting surgery and recovering from surgery.

If you’d like to donate money for us to purchase knitting needles or donate physical knitting needles (Hood River area) please send us a message! We are in need of these sizes of needles:
•knitting needle sizes 7-10US (4.5-5.75mm)
•10-12” length knitting needles
•any material

Thank you!

Many of these women came to the hospital camp alone, knowing no one. Their motivation for coming alone was the feeling of hope in the idea of reaching a hospital that could fix their leaking and restore their life! Many of these women traveled more than 5 hours by boda boda (passenger on a motorcycle), expensive taxis, over crowded buses, and walking with the fear of being kicked off of the transport because they were leaking. They came feeling alone and vulnerable, but they have found so much friendship and refuge in each other! The bonds they have formed have been so beautiful to witness!

• Two surgeons, one operating room •
These surgeons leave their homes, jobs, and personal responsibilities to come to the hospital camp for a week to do as many fistula repair surgeries as they can. They come several times a year to attend the hospital camps and they do not get paid. They are amazing men and women with good hearts. One of the Dr's has done about 7,000 fistula repair surgeries!! They are inspirational, they are heroes.

• The hospital ward •
The girls who are pre-op come to the hospital ward to await their turn in the OR. Even though the beds are made with beautiful donated knit/crochet blankets, the ward is filled with fear. For some girls this is there first surgery and they have no idea what to expect. For many girls this is there 3rd, or maybe 6th, fistula surgery and the memories of their previous experiences hang over their heads. As I walked in the hospital ward to see who the first surgery patients would be, I witnessed several of the women with their knitting needles. Tears came to my eyes when the girls saw me come in and excitedly motioned for me to come to their bedside to see their knitting progress. In a room that felt as though fear might consume me, there was light and warmth and peace in the girls as they knit.

The steps of the dormitory are where we tended to gather at Kitovu Hospital. These are the steps where we learned each other's names, embraced each other, and pieced together each other's stories. Many women and families from all over the country came to Kitovu Hospital seeking care during this Fistual Camp and it was beautiful to see everyone together.
