Health and Safety Precautions from our friend Ryan at Specialized Orthopedic Physical Therapy Warm up first: Treat shoveling like a workout. Perform 5–10 minutes of light stretching or movements like marching in place to loosen muscles.
• Stay hydrated: Drink water before, during, and after shoveling, as dehydration is common even in cold weather.
• Dress in layers: Use multiple layers of breathable clothing so you can remove them as your body heat rises to avoid overheating.
• Watch for heart warning signs: Stop immediately if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or pain radiating into your left shoulder/arm or jaw.

Wood River Health is honored to be featured in The Westerly Sun! This article highlights the incredible growth of Wood River Health, from our newly expanded Hope Valley space to our growing team, expanding services, and deep commitment to caring for our community for the past 50 years.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Alison Croke, we’ve nearly doubled the number of patients we serve, expanded access to primary care, behavioral health, dental care (yes, even on Block Island!), and opened new doors to meet increasing community need, despite unprecedented challenges facing community health centers nationwide.

As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we’re proud of our roots, grateful for our dedicated staff and supporters, and more committed than ever to our mission: providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients of all ages, regardless of ability to pay.

Thank you to our amazing community, partners, and donors—your support makes this work possible.

We’re thrilled to share that our Artist in Residence, Kara Marziali, was recently interviewed on Rona Mann’s “Man About Town” podcast (January 14, 2026 episode)!

During the conversation, Kara highlighted Wood River Health’s holistic approach to care — supporting the whole person emotionally, physically, and socially. This philosophy is at the heart of our partnership with Kara as she brings creative arts into behavioral health programming for our community.

One of the programs featured in the interview is Ageless Grace, a fun, chair based movement, music, and mindfulness practice designed to support cognitive function, mobility, and emotional resilience. Thanks to a grant secured by Sarah Channing, Ageless Grace was offered at the Richmond Senior Center and received wonderful community engagement ... especially among older adults and individuals with memory challenges.

Wood River Health is proud to be a forward thinking, community centered health organization that embraces innovative pathways to wellness. By blending creative arts with movement and mindfulness, Wood River Health continues to expand accessible, meaningful programs that enhance quality of life for patients and neighbors across our region.
