Traumatic events can really shake a person's sense of safety and stability, including individuals in recovery. Did you know that Wood River Health offers recovery support groups for our patients? A support group is a place where people with similar experiences come together to share, listen and help each other. Healing takes time, but it often starts with feeling safe again and reconnecting with supportive people and practices.

Our Behavioral Health team offers a safe place where people can begin and support their healing journey together. Certified Peer Recovery Specialists are people who have gone through recovery themselves. They are trained and certified by the State of Rhode Island to help others find their own path to recovery.

Below are the groups that are offered at Wood River Health and through our community partner NAMI Rhode Island!

Wood River Health's Senior Director of Integrated Care Christine King and Director of Development and Communications Sarah Channing were invited by Rona Mann to be on 321 Media's Mann About Town show on Wednesday, December 10.

Rona opens the show with a discussion about Wood River Health’s integrated care model, which combines medical, dental, behavioral health, and community resources under one roof. Christine King explains how this approach addresses barriers like transportation, housing, and food insecurity, while Sarah Channing highlights the organization’s free shuttle and van services that help patients reach appointments. Both emphasize that Wood River serves everyone, not just low-income individuals, and offers a community-oriented experience with amenities like on-site pharmacy, lab and even seasonal giving programs.

The dialogue then shifts to the emotional challenges of the holiday season. Christine underscores how grief, isolation, and mental health struggles often intensify during a time marketed as joyful, creating pressure and loneliness for many. They discuss coping strategies, including checking in on others, setting boundaries, and seeking support through programs like “Can We Talk...,” a monthly community event at the Granite Theatre. This program combines art, shared meals and trauma-informed dialogue to foster connection without judgment or unsolicited advice, offering a safe space for expression and listening.

Finally, they explored broader themes of intentional living and mental wellness. Christine advises creating pauses to make choices that align with personal well-being, rather than succumbing to social expectations or unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance use. They touch on the impact of technology and social media on stress and relationships, encouraging people to prioritize real-world connections. The hour concludes with Sarah previewing Wood River Health’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026, including community-building events like a gala, comedy night and breakfast at the Ocean House, underscoring the organization’s long-standing commitment to accessible, wrap-around care.
