Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is a type of dementia often called Pick’s Disease or frontal lobe dementia. Some of the first signs of FTD include, changes in personality or behavior and language difficulties.

There are two types of FTD:
1) Behavioral FTD which causes problems with behavior and personality.
2) Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) which causes language problems such as naming objects or understanding meaning of words.

Julie Chin was in the middle of her live broadcast when she started demonstrating warning signs of a stroke. She lost partial vision in one eye, one of her arms started feeling numb, and when it was her turn to speak, the right words did not come out. Thankfully, she is now recovering.

This reminds us of the importance of taking action when someone is exhibiting signs of a stroke: BE FAST

🗣Dr. Yadira Cantú is a licensed Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist with over 10 years of experience working with children and adults. She obtained her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas. After several years practicing, she furthered her education and obtained her Doctorate degree from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California.

🗣She is considered a generalist treating all aspects of communication disorders such as articulation, aphasia accent expansion, apraxia, dysarthria, early intervention, dysphagia, language disorders, stuttering, voice disorders, professional communication coaching, and more.

🗣She is a Certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS) with experience working with the neurodiverse population. In addition, Dr. Yadira Cantú, is certified in an exercise based dysphagia rehabilitation program, the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP).

🧠 Aphasia is a condition that affects a person’s linguistic knowledge and skills. The person may not be able to understand words as they can not remember the terminology they had before. They may forget to read and write as well.

🧠 In apraxia, a person’s linguistic ability stays intact, but they become unable to produce the sound of the words. The movements that are required to talk do not function properly or at all. They are not unable to understand what other people are talking about.

🧠 March is awareness month! These injuries comprise fall-related damage to the brain, forceful impact to the head, or pe*******on by sharp objects.

🧠 Among , concussions are the most common. They are caused when the brain is impacted by blows or wounds, and the person typically feels dazed if they retain consciousness. It may go undiagnosed if proper care is not taken.

🧠 An acquired or non-traumatic brain injury may be the result of , diseases such as meningitis or encephalitis, seizures, electric shocks, tumors, lead or carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning, and choking among other causes.

🧠 At least 2.8 million people in the U.S. sustain traumatic brain injuries per year.

😷 Chronic cough is a cough that lasts for 8 weeks or longer in adults and 4 weeks or longer in kids. It may occur with other symptoms, including a runny or stuffy nose, postnasal drip, wheezing, shortness of breath, or heartburn.
👩🏽‍⚕️ SLPs are part of the interdisciplinary team that helps treat chronic cough. We focus on practicing exercises to help diminish or resolve the urge to cough.
