🧩 Fact or Fiction? 🧩

The correct answer is fiction! While ABA therapy can range from 25 - 40 hours per week, you should always follow the clinical recommendation for your child. If you only attend 2 - 3 hours per week, your children may forget important skills, and your insurance may deny you coverage.

🌊 Splash Safely: Water Safety for Children with Autism 🌊

Essential Speech & ABA Therapy recognizes that water offers a delightful avenue for sensory exploration and enjoyment for children with autism. However, ensuring water safety is paramount for any child on the spectrum. Here's how to keep your children safe around water this summer:

🌊 Constant Supervision: Never leave a child unattended near any water source, including bathtubs, pools, toilets, or even buckets. Drowning can occur quickly and silently.

🌊 Secure Pool Fencing: If you have a pool, install a four-sided, self-closing, self-latching fence that is at least four feet high. This creates a crucial barrier.

🌊 Autism-Friendly Swim Lessons: Enroll your child in swim lessons specifically designed for children with autism. These often focus on vital water survival skills like floating and getting to the edge of the pool.

🌊 Empty Containers After Use: Promptly empty buckets, wading pools, and bathtubs after each use to eliminate potential hazards.

🏖️ The Best Vacations for Children with ASD! 🏖️

Traveling can be challenging for anyone, but for children with autism, vacations can be overwhelming. New sights and sounds can create a sensory nightmare for your child. Thankfully, many vacation destinations offer mindful rooms where children can de-stress after a long day, or have staff trained in autism awareness. Below are five perfect locations to take your little one this summer:

🧩 Beaches Caribbean Resorts - At the Beaches Caribbean Resort, every staff member is trained on autism awareness. They also offer a Kids Camp with adaptive activities!
🧩 Royal Caribbean - Royal Caribbean is the first autism-friendly cruise line! They have modified kids' programs, autism-friendly movies, and sensory-related toys on board.
🧩 Disney Parks & Resorts - Disney is the leader when it comes to fun, safe entertainment for children on the spectrum! Staff members are more than happy to adapt to your child’s needs, and will even provide front-of-the-line passes if you present a letter of diagnosis from your child’s doctor.
🧩 Dollywood - Dollywood is inspired by nature, with plenty of trees, shade, and rivers throughout the park. Best of all, they provide information about each ride and whether it’s appropriate for children with autism and other special needs.
🧩 Great Wolf Lodge - Family-friendly and affordable, the Great Wolf Lodge is an amazing vacation spot! They offer ADA-compliant guestrooms and list other accessibility features on their website.

🎆Preparing for the 4th of July! 🎆

It’s almost the 4th of July! While many of us look forward to this holiday, it can cause unnecessary stress for children with ASD. Bright lights, loud noises, and changes in routine may cause anxiety for your little one. Here are several tips to help your child relax and enjoy the :

🎆 Know your child’s limits - No one knows your child’s limits better than you! Pick an activity that your child is comfortable with, like a small family party, a festival, or simply celebrating at home.

🎆 Bring familiar food and drinks - If you’re attending a party, bring your child’s favorite snacks and drinks. This is helpful if you’re attending a BBQ where new foods will be introduced.

🎆 Bring distractions - If fireworks and parties are too much for your child, bring their favorite toys, tablets, and other distractions to keep them occupied.

🎆 Have a Plan B - In case things go awry and your child becomes overwhelmed, have a backup plan. Park your car close to the house or where your family will sit for the parade. Also, bring something that will calm your child if they have an outburst, like a blanket or a favorite toy.

🎆 Stay safe - Last but not least, stay safe this Fourth of July! It’s important to remind your child that fireworks and sparklers, while beautiful, can be dangerous. Silly string, glow sticks, and bubbles are safer alternatives for your child to handle.
