Eclipse PSA: There have been fake eclipse glasses released, as expected. How to tell?

Step 1: If they do not say ISO 12312-2, be highly suspicious. If they have an incomplete or absent address, be suspicious (see the image, in which the top is counterfeit and bottom is legitimate).

Step 2: Check the AAS solar eclipse website for vetted manufacturers/vendors (https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters).

Step 3: If they're true eclipse glasses, you should be able to see almost nothing indoors and outdoors. You should only be able to see something through them when you take a brief glance at the sun, at which time you'll see only the sun through the glasses. This doesn't guarantee that your glasses are fully protective, but these steps will at least eliminate some of the fakes.

Also, if you like the pinhole projection method, do NOT look at the sun through the pinhole. Let the eclipse shine down through the pinhole and look down at the shadow that it casts.

Dr. Walton spent the weekend in California teaching cataract and LASIK surgery to resident eye surgeons from across the country alongside professors from Harvard, Emory, Baylor, several University of California schools, and other private practice faculty. He lectured on cataract surgery pearls of wisdom and microsurgical ergonomics. The next day, he taught advanced cataract surgery techniques using 3D heads up displays.

Dr. Walton has personally instructed 400 eye surgeons - mostly from the US - in one-on-one lab simulation settings. This is in addition to the thousands of in-practice ophthalmologists and optometrists to whom he has delivered lectures on laser and advanced-technology lens surgery.
