The Deep 6. These are lateral rotator muscles that move the hip. Albeit small these muscles are very powerful together. And, these muscles can become aggravated through overuse or injury as well as they can press on the sciatic nerve.

Massage can allow for some deeper work in these muscles to help relieve tension.

Glute medius. We often think of the gluteus Maximus being the workhorse of the glutes and the medius is often overlooked, but weakness in this muscle can lend itself to lower back and knee pain. Yes, knee pain due to the kinetic chain of movements it can create pain down the leg.

The glute medius is the muscle that abducts your leg out to the side of your body, but sitting all day at a desk job can cause weakening of this muscle which can create dependency on the back muscles for stabilization. Activating the glutes can take the load off the back and create a more stabilized pelvis.

Fascia is a casing of thin connective tissue that holds everything in place on the inside of your body. It keeps your organs, cardiovascular system, nervous system and muscles located where they should. But, this tissue can become dehydrated or thick causing it to feel sticky which in turn causes tightness in the body. This equals tight muscles and trigger points that become the focus.

This is where a massage therapist can help. Creating space, movement and working on trigger points can help relieve pain and tension. Just make sure to also stay hydrated and incorporate movement to keep the body running like a well oiled machine. DM me for more info or to make an appointment.

Calf muscle (aka gastrocnemius) pain, sprain or strain? This can be a nightmare of an issue because every step taken involves this double-headed muscle. It can also impact the soleus, which lies beneath it as well as the Achilles’ tendon that it connects with and to the bottom of the foot.

Calf raises, plyometrics and strength training exercises are great for these fast twitch, durable muscle fibers. Massage can also help get these muscle fibers laying back down in the right direction as well as working out any trigger points. DM me to make an appt. if you need body work done.

Let’s talk about those front hip flexors, the psoas and the iliacus. These muscles pull your knee up to your chest and allow the hip to flex. But, if these muscles are always in a state of contraction (ie sitting for extended periods of time) and they aren’t stretched then they can cause trigger points and referred pain to the quadriceps. This pain can include numbness, tingling, aching, or even hot/cold sensations in the leg.

Through stretching and massage the iliacus and psoas can return to their normal resting state and muscle alignment can be restored.

Low back pain? Sitting for long periods of time? Yeah, your QL (quadratus lumborum) has been contracted for to long and needs some relaxation. This muscle is your “hip hiker” and is deep to your psoas muscle (front hip flexor).

I have the knowledge as a MMP to be able to target the front and back hip flexors and target these muscles through massage therapy.

It’s not been an easy year and with the holidays coming the stress can add up causing unwanted tension. Symptoms of persistent neck pain include:

* Headache
* Inability to rotate/move your head
* Muscle spasms or tightness
* Pain that gets worse when holding your head in the same place for a prolonged period of time

DM me to set up an appointment to help combat neck tension. Keeping pain at bat will help for a better holiday season.
