During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the powerful impact women have made across every profession—including the field of speech-language pathology. Women make up the majority of speech-language pathologists, and Black women in the field continue to break barriers, advocate for culturally responsive care, and give voices to individuals who may otherwise go unheard.

Representation matters. When children see professionals who look like them, it builds confidence, connection, and possibility. Black female speech-language pathologists play a vital role in supporting communication, literacy, and language development in our communities while also increasing awareness about speech and language differences.

This month, we honor the dedication, advocacy, and excellence of women—especially Black women—who are helping others find their voice every day. ❤️💚✨

🖤

We share resources, not rivalry.

There is room.
There is revenue.
There is reach.

We pass contracts.
We pass contacts.
We pass confidence.

Because collaboration compounds.
And ecosystems outperform egos.

This is how women build differently.

💬 Prelinguistic Communication Milestones: Around 2 Months Old 💕

As a speech-language pathologist, I love celebrating communication development from the very beginning. Today, I’m sharing a special moment—this little one just turned two months old, and she’s beginning to show some beautiful early communication skills. I’m using her photo to highlight typical prelinguistic milestones we often expect around this age.

🧠 Typical Communication & Developmental Milestones at ~2 Months:

👶 Communication & Social Interaction
• Begins cooing and vowel-like sounds
• Smiles socially in response to familiar voices and faces
• Makes eye contact and briefly holds gaze
• Shows pleasure through laughing or excited sounds

👂 Listening & Awareness
• Startles or quiets to loud sounds
• Turns head slightly toward familiar voices
• Becomes more alert to speech and environmental sounds

🖐️ Motor & Engagement Skills (support communication!)
• Reaches toward people or objects
• Brings hands to mouth
• Demonstrates improved head control during tummy time

✨ These early behaviors are the foundation for later speech and language development. Prelinguistic skills—like eye contact, vocal play, and social smiles—are just as important as first words!

📸 Photo shared with love as a proud grandparent and for educational purposes💕

🗣️ Concerned about your child’s speech or language development? Don’t wait.

One of the hardest things for children—and parents—is delaying support when concerns first arise. If you’re noticing difficulties with speech, language, understanding, or communication, reaching out early to a speech-language pathologist for an assessment can make a meaningful difference.

Early evaluation helps identify strengths, areas of need, and the right next steps—whether therapy is recommended or not. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to ask questions and seek answers.

✨ We currently have openings available.
📍 Licensed to provide services in Texas and California, with Louisiana coming soon.

If you’re ready to take the next step or simply want more information, we’re here to help—supportive, professional, and family-centered.

🖤 Black History Month Spotlight: Representation & Advocacy in Speech Therapy

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black professionals who have shaped every field — including Speech-Language Pathology.

Did you know?

🔹 Black children are disproportionately identified for speech and language services, yet are often underrepresented in access to culturally responsive care.
🔹 Less than 10% of certified Speech-Language Pathologists in the U.S. identify as Black.
🔹 Cultural and linguistic differences are sometimes misinterpreted as disorders instead of differences.

One of the pioneers who helped shift this narrative was Orlando L. Taylor — a speech-language pathologist, researcher, and advocate who dedicated his career to multicultural issues in communication sciences and disorders. His work emphasized the importance of distinguishing language differences from language disorders and pushed the profession toward greater equity and inclusion.

In speech therapy, honoring Black history means:

✔️ Recognizing African American English (AAE) as a rule-governed linguistic system — not “incorrect” English.
✔️ Providing culturally responsive assessments.
✔️ Using dynamic assessment to reduce bias.
✔️ Advocating for equitable access to services.
✔️ Increasing representation within the field.

As clinicians, we have a responsibility not only to treat communication disorders but to protect linguistic identity and cultural dignity🖤🖤
