There are different types of trauma. By no means does it justify perpetuating harm onto others. It’s an opportunity to recognize patterns of why we behave the way we do. When it comes to multigenerational trauma (economic deprivation/poverty, food insecurity, violence, oppression, toxic stress, etc) those traumatic experiences can be passed down between generations!
- [ ] Not only does secret family recipes get passed down through families, so does trauma.
- [ ] Generational trauma can happen in the uterus. For example, the maternal stress a woman may experience while pregnant and living in a toxic environment.
- [ ] Generational trauma can cause epigenetic changes to occur to a person’s DNA.
-A study published in 2016 found that Holocaust survivors and their children were more likely to have changes in their FKBPF5 gene, a gene linked to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Why is it important to liberate future generations or break the cycle?
Generational trauma can lead to:
*anxiety
*depression
*emotional numbness
*depersonalization
*decreased attachment/connection with others
*impaired life skills
Treatment for Generational Trauma:
*Accepting what occurred and how it affects you
*Psychotherapy, or counseling
When symptoms are pervasive other options such as neurofeedback or medication management can be utilized until a goal of resolution is achieved.
