I cannot stress this enough…

As someone who’s been involved with this sport for over 25 years, competed at every level, and has been a Registered Dietitian for gymnasts for 6 years…

I pray that gymnastics world can get this through their brain when I say if your gymnast wants to maximize her potential in this sport, I don’t care how talented she is or how talented her coaches are, she needs to prioritize proper fueling.

Plain and simple.

I know my gymnasts are gonna have sugary caffeine drinks regardless of what I say (remember I WAS YOU for 20+ years) 🤪

So let’s at least make your sugary caffeine craving ✨balanced✨more often than not

I always tell my gymnast clients that I will NEVER ask you to restrict something from your diet entirely… unless you’re allergic lol

Everyyyy food has its place

It’s what we do WITH those foods and how OFTEN we consume those foods that make the difference

If my gymnast client tells me she wants a brownie every day - heck ya girl me too!!

So I’m gonna make sure we find a way to implement that brownie to where it’s goal-supportive for her

And sometimes I’m gonna tell her to NOT make the brownie goal-supportive because everyone needs a lil fun in their life too

We keep it real over here ✌️

But my biggest secret is this…

If we haven’t met yet, heyyy I’m Taylor Krippner! I’m the only Registered Dietitian who’s lived both the elite/D1 college experience. I run Next Level Nutrition - my signature program for competitive gymnasts training around 20+ hours looking to improve health and performance.

Micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.) are THE MOST overlooked part of your gymnast’s nutrition…

Your gymnast is a “good eater” but she could still be having a few symptoms of not eating enough (recurring headaches, injuries, soreness, or sickness; low energy; starving post-gym or not hungry at all the whole day, poor sleep, constant aches, extra moody after gym, slow recovery, skipped periods, etc.)

And it could be because she’s lacking ESSENTIAL micronutrients for her body to perform its absolute BEST.

That’s why I designed my Next Level Nutrition program to include intracellular micronutrient testing - it’s often THE missing piece to everyone’s puzzle.

In fact, I also include antioxidant testing for my gymnasts too. Because knowing EXACTLY what antioxidants are going to be the MOST effective at reducing inflammation in your gymnast’s body and repair her the fastest is HUGE for her overall health.

It’s to get QUICK fuel in your system for a solid energy boost going into the last half of practice

There’s a difference between what’s recommended and what’s realistic:

I always pair research-based evidence with realistic human advice

Research-based evidence would have me telling your gymnast she needs 10 hours of sleep every night, but if she gets up at 6:30am has to be at school by 8, gets out at 3, has gym 4-8… there is literally no way she could get 10 hours of sleep realistically

So I’d tell her to get as much as she possibly can and work with her on how to improve her sleep quantity gradually over time with research-based strategies

Same concept with energy drinks. No I don’t want her having them…

But yes I see it ALL the time when I go into coach practice and so if your gymnast gets to the point of wanting them…

Just make sure they are within the parameters:

- NSF certified for sport
- under 100mg
- doesn’t cause negative side effects

ANDDDDD that she’s fueling her body properly throughout her ENTIRE day 🚨🚨🚨

And if she’s not… THEN… I say NO energy drinks 😉

This isn’t talked about enough…

Think of it this way… your gymnast is in the PRIME stage of growth and development and that alone takes a TON of energy

But then you tack on 20+ hours of gymnastics a week…

Her body’s demand for nutrients is INSANE and it is VERY likely she is not eating enough to meet those demands

That’s why you often see young gymnasts with fractures, headaches, constant aches, soreness, low energy, extra moodiness, slow recovery, recurring sickness, dizziness, skipped periods… the list goes on.

Enough FOOD is what your gymnast needs. Enough VITAMINS and MINERALS is what she needs.

At her age it is critical her nutrition is prioritized not only for her current health in gymnastics but for her health into adulthood ⬇️

Ages 12-18 are when up to 90% of her peak bone mass is built, and once that window closes it doesn’t reopen.
