So excited about the Chef of the year competition!

Our beloved Chef Jaime Simoes Jr. has been selected as a 2025 LCS Chef of the Year finalist! Simoes will compete alongside four other finalists for the coveted title of “Chef of the Year.” Simoes will travel to Houston, Texas, to battle in an intense, “chopped-style” cook-off on July 31 at the Sysco Test Kitchens. Congratulations, Chef Jaime! We can’t wait to cheer you on as you represent Freedom Plaza and showcase your skills!

Our Assisted Living Book Club recently concluded its reading of The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton with a charming celebration titled the “Victorian Parlor Soirée.” Residents gathered to reflect on the novel’s themes of love, tradition, and societal expectations, engaging in lively discussion about the characters and the constraints of the Gilded Age. The setting was transformed into a cozy Victorian-style parlor, complete with lace, teacups, and classical music, creating an elegant and nostalgic ambiance. It was a delightful afternoon that honored both literature and fellowship, as residents connected over timeless storytelling and thoughtful conversation.

Our VGF residents enjoyed a meaningful and enriching outing to The Lanier Theological Library and Chapel. Surrounded by beautiful architecture and a peaceful setting, residents explored the library’s impressive collection and reflected in the serene chapel. The visit sparked thoughtful conversations and moments of quiet inspiration. The day was made complete with a delicious lunch at Los Cucos, where everyone enjoyed great food, warm fellowship, and a few shared laughs around the table. 📚⚖️🌮🌯

Our VGF residents recently enjoyed a creative and meaningful activity by crafting a beautiful magnolia flower out of oyster shells. The magnolia, often seen as a symbol of dignity, perseverance, and beauty, represents the strength and grace that comes with age. In Southern culture, it also embodies hospitality and a deep sense of home. The oyster shells, once tossed by the tide, symbolize resilience and transformation—reminding us that something once discarded can become something treasured. Together, the magnolia made from oyster shells is a powerful expression of beauty born through experience, strength, and creativity—just like our incredible Senior Living residents.🦪🎨🫟🖼️

These special events are filled with joy, recognition, and heartfelt appreciation for the wisdom, life stories, and vibrant spirits of our most seasoned residents. Congrats to Jonna Wisnieski, the 2025 Gala Volunteer of the Year for the Alzheimer's Association Iowa Chapter! Jonna has been Chair of the Purple Soirée gala in Des Moines since its inception in 2019, and she has been instrumental in leading the planning committee to grow the number of sponsorships, attendees and funds raised each year. She lost both of her parents and many other family members to Alzheimer’s disease and has spent countless hours volunteering to support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Purple Soirée. She truly believes that together we’ll find the first survivor of this terrible disease! Thank you to Jonna for her dedication to ! 💜
