Houston we have a problem!!
According to Fox26 Houston and Houston Health Department (HHD), Houston and Harris County are experiencing a syphilis outbreak after Houston Health Department (HHD) reports a 128% increase in cases among women and a nine-fold rise in congenital syphilis.
Let’s talk about it……….What is Syphilis?
Syphilis is s*xually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause serious health problems without treatment. Infection develops in stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). Each stage can have different signs and symptoms. New syphilis infections are known as primary, secondary and early latent syphilis.Syphilis can easily be treated with antibiotics but without adequate treatment, the infection progresses to the secondary stage when one or more areas of the skin break into a rash – usually non-itchy and most typically on the palms and soles. You can get syphilis by direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, a**l, or oral s*x. Condoms prevent the spread of syphilis by preventing contact with a sore. However, sometimes sores occur in areas not covered by a condom. Contact with these sores can still transmit syphilis.
Anyone who is s*xually active is at risk of contracting syphilis. If you have been recently diagnosed with any other STI, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia or HIV you at an increased risk of contracting syphilis
Why the focus on women?
If you are pregnant and have syphilis, you can give the infection to your unborn baby. Babies born with syphilis who go untreated can develop sever health problems that could ultimately end in death.
Take precautions ladies AND gentlemen!! Get tested!!
