The Science Behind Grafex
Another Carbon Form
In 1985 Krotos, Curls and Smalley discovered a new form of carbon(allotrope) in addition to known allotropes: graphite and diamond. Winning the Nobel prize in 1996 for their discovery, these scientists continued to experiment with the soccer-ball like structure and discovered new potential application in medical, biological and industrial fields.
In 1992 Daniel Ugarte discovered the mega buckminsterfullerene while producing C60 material with two approaches, heat and a microwave reactor. Captured images revealed an onion-like shape of nested, multi-shelled molecules. The result is a significantly more powerful material with a C60 core.
