Just For Tomorrow offers counseling services for people who suffer with addictions to alcohol, opiates (including m**hadone, Vicodin, he**in and fentanyl) m**hphetamines, crystal m**h, prescription pills, GHB, P*P. Though we deal mainly with substance-use disorder we can help people who are addicted to other substances such as toilet paper, detergent and the like. This is not a joke and should be taken seriously. Addiction affects everyone close to the one who suffers with the addiction.
Our mission statement: Substance-use disorder should no longer be anonymous; for if we don’t speak up we will stay stigmatized!
Scary right? It takes true courage to overcome this disease, one that has been labeled and recognized as a REAL disease for decades now. It’s time that we are recognized as being people who suffer with an actual disease and not a moral failing.
Addicts use due to a lack of distinction within their fight or flight response for their survival found within the cortex; or also called the old brain. Over millions of years of evolution humans with substance-use disorder evolved with an obscure view of what a threat to their survival really was that was immensely different then their counterparts. The parasympathetic nervous system which created a hormonal response in these humans over time began to try and treat the pathology in their cognitions (thinking patterns) and hormonal responses by the use of drugs (drug use is just the symptoms of an internal disease of the mind and PNS.)The addict uses substances and other compulsions to calm the high levels of cortisol, adrenaline and the like caused by the fight or flight response of the PNS to achieve an archaic way of reacting to survival threats. People with substance-use disorder view things such as rejection, success, human interaction as actual threats to their survival and use substances to protect their lives. Literally the addict sees these “threats” as emotional or mental deaths and the cortex and parasympathetic nervous system found a way, using drugs, to calm these threats.
Our threats, or fears, vary into a wide range of what others may seem innocuous; but to the addict it means mental and emotional death that needs protecting by using substances because of their lack of coping skills and healthy cognitions.
It is now taught that the disease of substance-use disorder is a biopsychosocial disease that is three-fold. Biologically we are different through what was described through the description of the cortex and evolution. Psychologically we also correlate it into biology with that the parasympathetic nervous system sees unrealistic threats as a form of mental death and the way the addict handles these threats is best treated with cognitive behavioral therapy; along with other forms of therapies that have been shown to be effective.
Lastly, socially our environments as children may or may not play a big part but that is exactly why the disease is three-fold, the same reason why people with “happy” childhoods still turned out with the same disease as ones who suffered traumatic childhoods. It is not just our experience, environment and social interactions throughout our lives but also how we biologically and psychologically react to life and it’s adversities.
This is just a very simple glimpse of the disease of addiction and in order to raise more awareness that this truly is a disease we MUST become un-anonymous. Please understand that we do consider why it was anonymous to begin with but with the change of times it is essential that more investment be put into the disease of substance-use disorder.
