🎁💤 What a beautiful message first thing this morning from my client who just started their plan 3 days. When they called me for a consult this past week their first concern was if their 3 month old would be able to self soothe because their Pedi told them that their baby was too young. After speaking with them I modified their plan to keep 1-2 night feeds since baby is still a lil underweight for his age.

🥰 This just made my Mother’s Day extra special knowing I was able to help this young family who has been struggling with sleep for the past 3 months.

👩🏻‍💻 I’m technically still on maternity leave since my schedule doesn’t allow me to fully support many clients at this time but I am still offering complimentary consultations and will take on clients on a case by case basis.

🥱 You may not realize it but you could be sabotaging your baby’s sleep. Newborns become overwhelmed and overtired very quickly. For the first month or so, baby maxes out at a 30-45 min awake window. That means from the time baby wakes up and eats (which takes up most of their awake time), gets a diaper change, and a quick cuddle, it’s already time for another snooze.

⏰ Catching that small window of opportunity can be tricky. Try for early rather than later. And keep playtime at a bare minimum.

☀️🌸🌷 Daylight Saving time is tomorrow, Sunday, March 13th the clocks “Spring Forward” 1 hour. For some people this doesn’t affect us much but for our kiddos..1 hour can really turn into a nightmare! So what is the best way to handle it? Here are some tips:
My advice is to start with small 15-min increment changes throughout the day with naps and work your way up to the normal time.

👦🏼 Method A—if you have kids that are in school and you need to have them there at the same time every day..then you might want to start a few days before the actual time change. Start by putting your baby down for naps and bedtime 15-mins earlier. If bedtime is at 7:00pm then on the first night put your baby down for bed at 6:45pm..then on the second night at 6:30pm..then the third night at 6:15pm..then by Sunday night you would put your baby down for bed at 6:00pm (but it’s actually 7:00pm adjusted time). You would also do the same thing for the morning. That means if they usually wake at 7:00am..then wake them up at 6:45am and so on. This way when the time changes..their bodies will be well adjusted.

👧🏽 Method B—your schedule is more flexible you can wait until Sunday..starting with the first nap...move that nap 15-mins earlier..same with the bedtime.
*Bonus tip: (Toddlers can handle 30 mins earlier).

👶🏻 Or, if it won’t interfere with your schedule and you would like a later bedtime and a later wake time..then embrace the change and do nothing!

🌅 Just remember that with this time change this means brighter evenings and mornings so make sure that your child’s bedroom is still dark enough..and to use a white noise machine to help block out any early morning sounds like birds chirping or the lawn guys.

🛌💤 Happy Daylight Savings everyone!! Sleep well!

✅ Yes..and in that order.

🍼 Try to feed your newborn when they wake from a sleep/nap instead of trying to feed them at the end of their awake window. This will allow for baby to be more awake during the feed and help with fuller feedings. This will minimize the chances of your baby falling asleep at the boob/bottle. Newborn awake windows are still short (approx. 45 mins. including the feeding time), so aim for 5 mins of play time/tummy time between a feed and the next nap.

🤱🏻 Two months already!! The newborn days go by so fast. This time around I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss a beat. Between the nursing every 2-3 hours and the long nights of cluster feeding I managed to sneak in a few Zzzz’s. So grateful for my husband as my tag team partner..juggling a toddler’s schedule with a newborn is chaos..but we’re starting to find our rhythm. Thank God for our moms for all the meals and the visits. I’m so glad I am able to take this time off to focus on me & my family and our well being. Lil’ Eli is thriving and Big brother EJ is honoring his new role.

👶🏻💤 This time around things are so much better in regards to sleep. Eli is already sleeping a 5 hour stretch in the first part of the night and taking 3 or 4 naps a day/2-3 hrs long. He is learning how to self-soothe and falls asleep independently 90% of the time. Just a couple more months and he’ll be ready to sleep through the night and so can Mama!

👼🏻🎄So I’m officially on maternity leave. Our lil’ angel arrived Christmas Eve..a whole month earlier than expected but he is doing amazing and he is just perfect!

👩🏻‍💻 I won’t be taking on any new consults during this time but I’m still available via email for troubleshooting tips for any past clients. I will make sure to return emails at the end of each day.

🤱🏻 As for my Ig & FB accounts I will do my best to stay in touch and post as best as I can. I will probably start with the newborn phase and have you follow along my journey to better sleep.

Until then, sleep well my friends!

😩 The truth is..parenting is hard work! There’s no right or wrong way..there’s just what way works for you and your family.

🏋🏻‍♀️ With that being said, the same applies to sleep training. Being successful depends on how much work you put into it and how consistent you are..not so much as to which method you use.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Every child/baby is different, every family is different..the hard part is finding what works for you and your family. Set a plan and stick to it. If you need help with creating one that is doable, call me and we can chat about it!

🚙 Whether it’s a short road trip to Grandma’s or an overnighter..plan your travel around your baby/child’s routine.

✈️ Here’s some last-minute sleep tips for Thanksgiving travels:

🏡 Try to get at least one nap at home - if not possible then try to sync car/plane rides with your child’s usual nap time.

🌌 Keep it familiar - try your best to re-create the same sleep environment (If your child is used to it being dark in their room then bring blackout curtains or better yet a Slumberpod). Use a sound machine or white noise to drown out loud noises that may startle or distract baby.

⌚️ Avoid skipping naps and later bedtimes - stick to your baby’s age appropriate awake windows and if naps are missed then try your best to recover by setting an early bedtime.

🧸 Bring your child’s favorite toy/lovey.
🩳 Bring some comfy pajamas.
📚 Bring a couple of baby books.
🚼 Bring a portable crib or bassinet to use as safe place for baby to sleep in.

✅ Preparation is key to any kind of traveling with baby..that means also being flexible and ready for bumps in the road..give yourself grace and if you need help..give me a call and I can help guide you along to a successful journey!

🍽🦃🍁 Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

👶🏽 💤 That’s right! What you do with your baby during the day can help your baby sleep better through the night. Here’s some tips to set yourself up for nighttime success:

☀️ Get outside! Get outdoors for a dose of sunlight (especially before noon). This will help regulate baby’s natural circadian rhythm.

🎶 Create a simple routine. Babies learn from routine. Use the same sequence of steps for your bedtime routine for mini pre-nap routines during the day to help your little one recognize it’s time for sleep. (Ex. diaper change, swaddle, story/lullaby, use white noise, turn off lights, place in crib).

🌌 Create a cool & dark sleep environment. The more baby naps during the day, the better they will sleep through the night. Use blackout curtains, Slumberpod, etc. to create a “nighttime” for naps.

🕰 Prevent overtiredness during the day. Follow age-appropriate awake windows.

☕️ Avoid stimulants. If you’re breastfeeding, avoid consuming things like dark chocolate, coffee, & sodas that could disrupt your baby’s sleep pattern.

💩 Encourage daytime p**ping. Some nice belly massage and knee-to-tummy exercises will help your baby p**p during the day, so that night sleep isn’t disturbed by gassy bellies and grunting.

😫 Yay! We get to set the clocks back and enjoy an extra hour of sleep! Said no parent ever!

🔧 So here’s yet another monkey wrench thrown into your little one’s perfect sleep schedule..Daylight Savings time is this weekend, Sunday, Nov. 7. An extra hour may not seem like much to us grown-ups but for a child it is an eternity and it can really throw your baby off schedule..especially if your baby is used to a certain schedule like daycare. If you don’t want your baby to get caught up in an early morning wake-up pattern then here are a couple strategies to help your baby adapt as quickly and as smooth as possible to the time change.

🗓 Option A: Start 4-5 days before the actual time change to get your child used to staying up later and waking up later than usual in 10-15 min increments longer each day. For example if bedtime is normally at 7p..then starting this Wednesday, hold off bedtime until 7:15p, then the next day 7:30p, then 7:45p, then 8p..until the night of the time change. Do the same for their morning wake-up time. If your baby is used to getting up at 7am then get her up at 7:15a, then 7:30a, 7:45a, and 8am.
*Naps will stay the same. Just follow your child’s wake windows.

⏰ Option B: If your schedule is more flexible you can wait until Sunday, Nov. 1..start with the first nap..move that nap 15 mins earlier..same with the bedtime. (Toddlers can handle up to 30 min increments later). If bedtime is 7p, do a 6:30p bedtime for the first 3 days after the time change. (This will feel like 7:30p to your child). Then move bedtime back to 7p. Understand that it will take the body about a week to adjust.

🍂 Happy Fall everyone!

🙋🏻‍♀️ Hi there! It’s been a while since my last post. Hope y’all didn’t forget about me.

🙍🏻‍♀️ Honestly, the last couple of months have been physical and mentally exhausting for me. I’ve been carrying the “mom guilt” on my shoulders for long enough and I’ve finally decided to just let it go and give myself permission to just take care of me.

🤷🏻‍♀️ It hasn’t been easy, being in my third trimester, running around chasing my almost 3 yr old, maintaining a household and putting aside time for my business and my clients..something had to give. I felt like I was failing if I couldn’t give my 100%. But I realize now that the person putting the pressure on me was ME. I’m allowing myself now to be ok with not giving all the time and taking breaks to take care of me. I took a much needed vacation. My little one is now in school part-time and he will be going full-time once the new baby is here. And so I now have a lil’ light at the end of the tunnel reserved just for me..until I enter the newborn stage again.

💁🏻‍♀️ I just turned 43 years young yesterday..and I’m thankful to be able to be here to navigate this thing we call LIFE. Cheers!

🤱🏼🤱🏻🤱🏽🤱🏾🤱🏿🤱 As National Breastfeeding Awareness Month ends, let’s talk about some myths around breastfeeding and sleep that you may have heard of.

❓Did you know that you CAN breastfeed your baby and sleep train? In fact the two go hand in hand..despite the myths that sleep training your baby will cause you to lose your milk supply. I actually breastfed my son for a whole year and he started sleep training at 4 months old. And here at Sleeping Pandas I actually encourage moms to breastfeed their babies and I help to provide lactation counseling and support during their sleep training journey.

😴 After all, a mom who sleeps well is healthier and is able to be more attentive to her baby’s breastfeeding needs. Getting the sleep she needs to be healthy also helps increase her milk production. And babies who sleep better are also getting full feeds instead of just “snacking” at the breast all day.

👶🏼💤 Sleep training with is very personalized. I make sure to take into account you and your baby’s unique needs and develop a plan that will help you protect your breastfeeding relationship while achieving better sleep for you and your baby.

⭐️ Did you know that you can use reward charts as a tool for sleep training your older kiddo too? Reward charts are used to help with changing a child’s behavior.

🎖 It’s a powerful way of encouraging the behavior you want, like going to bed without a fuss. Or discouraging behavior you don’t want, like climbing out of their crib or getting out of their room in the middle of the night. Rewarding your child for practicing a new skill, like staying in their bed until 7am, shows them when they’ve done a good job and helps to keep them motivated. Reinforcing good behavior will make it more likely to happen again.

👦🏻 Reward charts work well for children 3-8 years old but I’ve had clients and my own son who is 2 1/2 yrs old use it with success.

📆 Just remember to try it out consistently for at least 2-3 days before you will notice a change in behavior and up to 2 weeks for the new behavior to stay.

😭 Baby is crying, sucking on hands or fists, rooting and suckling at breast/nipple…

😴🍼❓Sleep cues and hunger cues are almost the exact same..so it can be so hard to tell! As a new parent the first instinct you get is that your baby is hungry, so you go to feed him and he starts dosing off after just a minute of sucking/feeding. Most parents will automatically think baby was hungry instead of tired..especially if baby just woke up from a short 30 min nap. It’s easy to underestimate just how much sleep your baby needs.

⌚️ So instead of relying on just your baby’s cues..use appropriate wake times by age (see highlights for wake times). This will help you see what baby is really trying to tell you that they are tired! This will lead to more successful sleeping and fuller feedings..not “snack & snoozers!”
