I remember it like it was yesterday. I was working at a law firm in Downtown Houston that just happened to be in the penthouse suite of One Allen Center. I was surrounded by nothing but glass as we were watching the news unfold live on TV. I remember seeing two different SWA planes fly by before all flights were grounded (as they did everyday) and being extremely fearful that I was going to watch something unfold in Houston. We immediately let everyone go home that day and quite honestly all I could think about was getting back to Cypress and getting my kids.

The images are forever implanted in my mind and in my heart.

Unfortunately, I feel no safer today than I did that day. I’m honestly more fearful now than then because I am no longer the naïve little American that I once was. I’m always wondering when the next tower will fall.

The Houston Chronicle offers an alarming glimpse into what is happening in hospitals and freestanding ERS in the region and in the state.

“Typically, it takes less than an hour to find a bed,” said Dr. Swapan Dubey, chief medical officer at Texas Emergency Care Center, which has two Houston-area freestanding ERs. “Nowadays in my own centers, we’re hearing cases that are taking 30 to even 50 hours.”

I am immensely proud of our work during the regular session to pass COVID liability protections, and it was an honor to see Governor Abbott sign those protections into law. Business owners stepped up during COVID, and this will protect them from frivolous lawsuits.

I can’t believe it’s been 15 years since we took a leap of faith and became a trailblazer in the world of Freestanding Emergency Care and a disruptor to healthcare in Texas!

I wouldn’t change a thing, except of course payer behavior and a few laws here and there!

I am so thankful for my partners, staff, patients and the communities we serve! I am grateful for the opportunities and growth that has come from this risky but very rewarding experiment!

Today marks the 15th Anniversary of Texas Emergency Care Center! We are so grateful to have been serving our communities in emergency medicine for the past 15 years, and we can't wait to see what the future holds.

Abbott's signature means that businesses that require so-called vaccine passports can't get state contracts and could lose state licenses or operating permits.

About Me

An active voice and industry advocate, I formed Sandel Healthcare Consulting in 2014 to share my knowledge, experience, and expertise in the healthcare industry. As an industry leader and expert in healthcare operations and management, I am sought out by healthcare professionals and legal groups for consulting on practice development and management, ambulatory surgery centers, emergency room operations, and management, and legal consulting. A known industry leader, I am frequently called upon to testify regarding regulatory issues.

I began my career in the healthcare industry over 25 years ago as a registered nurse before starting Sandel Legal Nurse Consultants in 2001. While consulting, I met the physicians that ultimately founded Texas Emergency Care Center, joining their team as CEO.

As part of their vibrant practice, Texas Emergency Care Center began its own internal revenue cycle efforts. It wasn’t long before their success brought requests to take on external clients and Gryphon Healthcare was born.

In addition to my role at Gryphon Healthcare, I am an active, founding member and Immediate-Past President of the Texas Association for Free-Standing Emergency Centers (TAFEC) and National Association of Free-Standing Emergency Centers (NAFEC).
