Overdose prevention and awareness continue to be effective tools in preventing overdose deaths.

As we approach on August 31st, it’s important to highlight how learning to recognize the signs of an overdose and understanding how and when to use tools like Narcan (naloxone) can empower people to act quickly in emergencies.

By fostering open conversations and providing accessible resources, communities can create a supportive environment where life-saving interventions become second nature.

On Positive Recovery MD, we’ve covered various topics around overdose prevention, advocacy efforts in spreading overdose awareness, the dangers of opioid misuse, and how to talk with your loved one who may be struggling with substance abuse. 

Two episodes in particular, Dr. Jason Powers, Chief Medical Officer at Positive Recovery, and Dr. Mark Gold, often referred to as the “Godfather of addiction medicine,” emphasized how far addiction treatment has come, moving from surface-level interventions to deeper, science-backed strategies.

🚫 Myth: Overdose only happens to people who are long-term addicts.

✅ Truth: Overdose can happen to anyone.

Even if it’s their first time using a substance.

Even if they’re taking a prescribed medication the wrong way.

Even if it’s something they thought was “safe.”

Overdose doesn’t discriminate, and it’s not limited to what you might picture. It can happen to your friend, your coworker, your teen, or someone trying something “just once.”

Education can save lives.

That’s why we’re breaking down myths and shining a light on the truth.

The more we talk about it, the more we can prevent overdose.

The problem with college drinking culture?

Most students start drinking before they’re legally allowed, and their brains are still developing. That early exposure increases the risk of poor academic performance, risky behavior, and long-term addiction.

Which is why it’s so important to recognize the warning signs early and create space for honest conversations about alcohol use.

Every year on August 31st, communities gather together for , the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, acknowledge the grief of friends and family left behind, as well as extend our gratitude to those who have experienced an overdose but are still with us and have chosen new life in recovery.
